Thank you for all the replies. MJCann is right that the old red and black cores have been sleeved but there's still a tiny bit visible in the photos, well spotted!

I think once I've plucked up the courage I'll try pulling the cable through. As the rest of the house wiring has been renewed it seems a bit silly to leave this little bit, especially if it might give me aggro in the future. If the cable gets lost halfway then I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

MMUK - I think I follow your lead and fit a JB above that particular fitting. I hate trying to hold a light fitting in one hand while terminating a dozen cores with the other. Simply terminating three sounds a lot more civilised.
 
Technically, you only need two cores dropped through for a pendant but I always drop an earth through as well just in case a metal lamp fitting goes up at a later date :)
