Hi,
This may b e a silly idea because I've never used it so no experience.
1) Cut down to first depth with hole saw.
2) Hack out "plug" with chisel or with a Dremel with a wood burr attached...I mean like a cheese grater shaped into a drum.
3) repeat to about 7.75 inches
4) Use mortise lock chisel to flatten and clean up the bottom to a flat.
If thats not Ok then try to use a set of forstners.....say 25mm, then 50 mm then 80 mm.
