Can anyone suggest a finish which does not colour (yellow) the wood? I've seen this question posed before and recall that Chestnut Finishing Oil was recommended. I've tried that and wax, but it still does yellow the item.

lemon oil-will look like it's yellowed it but after 3/4 days you wont know its been oiled -it looks so natraul

It really depends on the wood. Ash is terrible for turning yellow. Lemon oil is good and woodwax 22 over the top is ok but it won't stay the lovely pale colour. I've heard a water based finish is best for non-yellowing. But I've not tried it myself. The other option is shellac but you need to use the ultra blonde flakes.

Thanks both. I'll try the lemon oil. Terry should be at Harrogate tomorrow. I mean, some woods are better for oil, but some are definitely spoiled by it IMO. Could I get away with just sanding sealer ?

Shellac sanding sealer can be lighter. But cellulose will still yellow, more so IME. Acrylic Sanding Sealer might work (being water based) but I've not tried it.

Depending on what your item is going to be used for, you might be able to use a lacquer. The cellulose one that Martin Pidgeon brings to the club doesn't colour the wood and I suspect that the Chestnut ones don't either.

Thanks - I've meant to get the Rustins plastic coating for a while so I will do. I'll also track the Chestnut man down at Harrogate this morning - though both of these suggest a shiny finish.

RPC definitely produces a glossy finish, although you can knock it back to produce a lustre if that's preferred.
