If I set-up three playlists on the iPod shuffle - pop, classical, jazz - then when I'm listening to the iPod can I select a playlist and then it shuffles just within that playlist?

How easy is it, in practice, selecting a playlist on the Shuffle?

Does it depend on which generation the iPod shuffle is?

Many thanks

Roger

Ummmm... I've got a 1'st gen iPod shuffle and there are no playlists. It just plays everything that's on there, either one after t'other, or randomly (although I do doubt its' randomness at times)

Not sure about the older shuffles but on the latest it's easy. Hold the centre button down and it will start telling you what track your listening to, then it will then beep. Release the button and it will start telling you what playlists you've got i.e. All music, 80's music, audio books etc... Just click the button when it gets to your chosen playlist.

Bought a 3rd generation off fleabay and it does allow playlists which is pretty cool.

One question. I read somewhere that some company was bringing out an adapter that provided the functionality of the dongle on the iPod earpieces but which then allowed you to use your own earpieces. But I'm having trouble tracking it down. The iPod earpieces keep falling out of my ears because I run so fast.

Go on then. Someone explain to me why anyone would buy a shuffle? I simply don't understand the concept.

Tom, the best thing about the shuffle is that it's so small.
I have 3 mp3 players; my n97, ipod nano gen4 and a shuffle.
The shuffle is used during the warm weather in the summer. It's so small I can clip it to my sunglasses and don't then need to worry about needing long lead ear pieces - which aren't a good idea if I'm out using any machinery.
The n97 & nano tend only to be used when I'm wearing a full set of clothing.

Tom,

It's small, it's "cool" and most importantly it's APPLE.

The impracticalities don't come into it with any of the above.

You didn't just type that did you? No, must be the morphine.

I just can't get my head around not being in control of what I want to listen to? The Nano is so small and light. If I do wear my earphones when travelling in the summer then I just run the lead from my back pocket inside my t-shirt to my ears. If I saw someone with a shuffle clipped to their sunglasses, it'd be everything I had not to laugh and point, sorry ;)

It's great to remove the boredom of being on a treadmill in the gym! I tried it out this morning and it was great fun not knowing what was coming next. The one drawback is that when you do get a track from a favourite album, you know what is coming next and so do, I admit, get a bit frustrated when your expected track doesn't play next.

But having said that, if I was quick enough then I'd simply move the control to 'play in order' while the track was playing and then I would get the rest of the album. So you get the best of both worlds!!

Still got my normal Nano but the controls are starting to wear out and get distinctly 'iffy'.

And, as BS says, it's Apple.

So don't use a treadmill, or a gym for that matter :)
Go for a cycle (or even a run, not that I ever do) outside in the fresh air instead...
Agreed...if you want excercise, get out in the fresh and bin the things sticking in you ears (or hanging onto sunglasses :? )
If I listen to music it's at home, sitting on the sofa, feet up, glass of vino in hand, with a CD on a respectable system played through half decent speakers...and if it's something I like...loud! I never have, and never will buy a Ipod shuffly thingie or whatever - Rob...music luddite
Edit - and I expect you drive to the gym as well Rog

There are some radical ideas in this thread....

I hate running even more than I hate being on the treadmill. Mucks up your knees for a start. As for cycling, why should I add to those already clogging up the roads and slowing down cars....sorry..coat...get.

Besides, it's too cold and wet and i'll get filthy if not run over. And no, I'm not running up the Malvern Hills.

Already had an operation on one knee, so I'm not running either :)

I never said you should cycle on the road. We're lucky here in that there are several easily accessible off-road tracks.

Good excuse not to cycle then as we've got none around here!

I've never liked running. We've borrowed a treadmill for my re-coup but it's being used for walking only. My brother in law who's an oesteo says the majority of his knee patients have problems relating to mis-use of treadmills. Many have them too fast and because they are constantly trying to keep up with them their legs are slamming down on the runway at great force. You should only ever use them for jogging. If you want a proper run then going 'outside' (shiver) is the only option.
