Or the harpsichord sounding like skeletons copulating (fornicating) on a tin roof in the rain? Or to the female cellist - "you have something between your legs that gives pleasure to thousands of men, and all you can do is scratch it."
The gentleman thing I usually read as bagpipes.

The cellist one I was deliberatey avoiding

The saxophone one was told me by someone who might conceivably have worked with Beecham, so I took it as genuine, but it equally applies to the pipes. I think Sax intended it to be an orchestral instrument, to which B. objected.

Beecham was born early enough and lived long enough to have encountered both Sax and Stockhausen, and the quote about the latter is even on the Stockhausen Wikipedia page (just found it!).

Let's keep well clear of Von Karajan though. I might have mentioned him, once, but I think I got away with it...

(Larry Adler playing Genevieve)

The only person in the universe to make the mouth organ sound musical. It is a hideous instrument.

That is all ;-)

She's had 18 million views on You Tube, so some must like it! :D

QUOTE: It is a hideous instrument. That is all UNQUOTE:

No it isn't, and it isn't. It's purely a matter of personal taste - just as some apparently like pallet wood furniture and some hate it! :D

Thanks for posting the Genevieve link Eric.

For those that do, rather than those who don't, try this:

(Corky Siegel, 3rd movement, "Street Music", William Russo)

Glad you liked it Jacob. I have the whole thing on CD (I once had an ambition to play a bit myself, but gave up really - singing's easier - well a bit easier anyway). :D

I think the rest of the piece, + some others are also listed on the RH side of that link, try those, Siegel's really very good.

P.S. QUOTE: .... Siegel's really very good. UNQUOTE: As is the French (?) lady that Graham Orm originally posted. I found a video class by her on youtube. It seems she was originally/still is a classical woodwind player - it shows (or rather, "it sounds").

I came across this by chance (honest!) for anyone interested -

I had already seen this Phil, but have saved it now. I used to play a bit years ago, but my playing was making the thing make a recognisable noise compared to the way she makes it sing.

Have you seen how many Harmonica's she has? Probably 40 or so, she shows them in one of the tutorial videos.

I play harmonica music; but not FROM music. I can play 'Genevieve''; but only badly!

I used to lean on the ship's bulwarks at sea, and practice. I lodged my feet in the deck ring-bolts in case anyone came behind me and pitched me over the side!

Almost forgot... for some reason I play left-handed. I.e. with the lever push in my left hand; makes my tremolo a bit hit and miss!

That lady makes it sing, because she feels it! Great!
