I seem to remember someone building a 'shop filter using the filters from this:

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... e=1&jump=0

But I can't find the thread

I have a good extractor fan ( what I found on a skip) and assume the rest is just a box with a pair of filters.

I might go for the more expensive Charnwood filters though.

A guess either way (Ax or Charnwood) they are nothing special, just a fan sucking the air though a pre-filter and blowing it out via a finer one.

Thanks Shultzy, thats exactly the one!

Make up your own mind if I'm too stupid or too idle to find it myself.

Actually I'd remembered pretty much how it was made, but wanted to double check

Ax filters are now on order
Can these be washed??

Anyone got any recent experiences / improvements on the DaveL design?

Its nice to think other have found this idea useful. :D

I have never tried to wash them, I just vacuum them, the outer one when ever I have clean up it the shop. Will those of you who have been in my shop please stop smirking at the back. The inner one in due for another clean I only do that once a year.

Same here...I just vac out the filters when the 'shop gets cleaned. Amazing to see what crud they pick up  - Rob

Thanks chaps!

It's just the cheap skate in me thinking about buyiing replacement filters.

So...... the answer sounds like "not very often" - which is nice

I made mine so that it sucks through the pre-filter and then the main filter. The fan doesn't blow through anything.

I've got the MTM - as Dave said, the fan sucks through both filters.
I vacuum the pre-filter every use,and take the main filter out and vacuum it about once a month, when servicing/cleaning the lathe.

Thanks Dave, once I'd seen DaveL's post I realised how it was configured.
