Having finally got my workshop setup in my garage :) I have now started accummulating bags of sawdust and planer chippings and am wondering how to get rid of them.

1. Burn them in a dustbin burner
2. Put them in black bags and put out for the dustbin men
3. Recycling centre ?
4. ?

Just wondered what other forumites do.

Thanks

I try keep my sawdust and chippings separate

I dont use much man made timber so what works for me is

The chippings go as mulch under the shrubs, the sawdust in the compost with grass and other compost..
If your LOcal, council does a brown bin collection they make take it at the recycling centre

My wife has horses, but she only takes softwood shavings and I refuse to make furniture with pine.

Green bin for turning into compost at the recycling plant :)
So will they ley me dispose of it in the same section where people put there grass cuttings and garden material ?

Why not try freecycle, I'm sure some pet owners in your area would be only to pleased to come and take it off your hands

That's what goes in my green bin that gets collected every 2 weeks...
They are a bit behind the times here in Dorset. We have a recylcing collection for glass / paper. Not sure what paper they do take as half the time they refuse to take the paper we put in our green bag

Mine also goes in the 'Garden Waste' bin. The first time I emptied the chip collector in there, they didn't take it. But a quick phone call to the council, to point out that their leaflets and website clearly state 'Sawdust', soon sorted that problem. They've taken it every week since.

Green bin here as well, works out well for the winter months when its not full of hedge clippings and grass

Mine all goes over to the cricket club.
Beginning of last season I had so much over there I supplied sawdust to 4 other clubs as well - all were very thankful.

Don't have a problem with chippings as keep chickens so always happy to make lots of chippings/shavings. Hadn't thought of the green bin (well brown bin here) to be honest so will look into that. My problem is saw dust. I tend to cut a fair amount of man-made sheets. I assume this cannot go into the green bin?

However, I have just fitted a hotspot stove which aapparently burns sawdust. Anyone else have one of these and has burnt sawdust in it. If so how do you go about it?

Why Flanajb?

I used to have similar reservations. Now hardwoods are scarcer and ever more expensive, I relaxed on that one. Good quality pine is okay and I am even making my new workbench from it. (I avoid B&Q quality of course!)

I soon found out that Pine needs scary-sharp tools and extra care to avoid bruising.

As for the pet shops, they wouldn't take anything but pine, but only if it was sterilized first! So my chippings go on the compost heap or in the 'brown-bin' for Council compost!
