I think the 'brake' idea is certainly worth thinking about.

I wouldn't worry about a brake. I made a similar one for my kids 30-odd years ago. From what I remember, when they were very young they wouldn't push it fast enough to worry about stopping. Later they would race me up and down the garden when I was cutting the grass - they usually won

LOL - the "brake" was not for stopping the truck in normal use. More to stop the truck rolling away on its back wheels from under the child if it tipped up. The chocks/brake would come in to contact with the floor and slow it all down to save the littlun landing on his/her face.

Just one of those things unfortunately. You are aware it MIGHT happen but just one more tap... (homer) D'oh!!!

The other thought would have been to of left the handle loose (ie to small for the hole) so it could turn, then put a finial of some sort on the end to stop it sliding out.

Tom, that looks really good! I'm sure you can recover the situation, as others have suggested, without recourse to replacing the handle completely.

When my daughter used one, she tended to use it with her arms outstretched which gave her plenty of foot clearance. As such I would be tempted to locate the handle a few cm further forward as that will help the stability.

One thing is for sure, you'll be feeling plenty proud when your daughter starts to use it

d'oh another good idea Pete. Thanks. I had thought about setting the roundover bit a fraction higher in the router table, but your method is probably safer.

Cheers Gidon. I actually saw that whilst doing my research. Looks like your handles are a bit further forward, so that confirms my thoughts.

Actually that has prompted me to think about the finish. You used finishing oil. Isn't that a blend of oils, much like Danish oil? I hadn't considered what I'd use yet. I think Ash has a tendency to yellow? I have some melamine lacquer, but not sure I want to go to the hassle of applying it :roll:

Wizer - yes finishing oil - it still looks ok 3 years and 2 more children on!
It's Liberon finishing oil which at least offers some claim to being safe for children's toys IIRC.

Just a quick update. I spent a good few hours in the workshop today remaking the handles. It was quite time consuming but I'm glad I took the time to re-make them. I took a lot of pics and no ****-ups thus far. I want to put a finish on them before glue up. Over the next couple of day I want to experiment with a few different finishes. When I am done I will post a semi-WIP thread.
