I am, to put it mildly, not a fan of Mr Cosman but I guess he's just a guy trying to make a living and there are many who do like what he does. I don't get his fixation with the whole vet thing, however, tho' I suppose he has his reasons.
BTW, I don't own a planer or thicknesser and dimension everything with hand tools- it just isn't that hard -time consuming maybe, but not difficult.

That one does annoy me somewhat. The way he does all the Purple Heart interviews, it feels like he's going for an easy win. America has a big thing about their ex-forces guys at the minute, possibly a guilt backlash over Vietnam. Say a word against them and you're condemned.
But the cringiest part is when he's had them talk about all their trauma and suffering, and says (pretty much in these words), "Tell everyone about how the wonderful Purple Heart Project has helped you so much...". Just feels so patronising.

Still working on my own hand dimensioning. You're right - Time is the biggest factor, although end grain is my biggest bugbear at this point.

Check out The English Woodworker (Richard Maguire) if you want to see a no nonsense approach to flattening by hand.

Yeah Mike, Richard definately shows the difference between us and the yanks in approach to things. It amazes me how child like most of the American stuff on youtube etc is in general. Over-hyped, artificially intensified and emmotionally over exaggerated. Cosman just follows the US format of, if it's not nearly impossible or fraught with the immenent danger of PTSD then you havent achieved anything

Is it one of his free videos? couldn't see anything on youtube.

I dunno Droogs, I think that might be a bit hard on the likes of Shannon Rodgers or James Wright. Thing is, afaik Cosman is Canadian rather than American- yes I know they're both strictly speaking North America, but he seems at great pains to appear more American than Canadian for some reason.

As for Mr Maguire, I do like what he does but I wouldn't be surprised if one day he makes a chair using only a hammer and his teeth "wi'out usin' b**tard 'and planes" so no nonsense is his approach.

Anyhow apologies for drifting away from the original topic!

I like him because the man shows you what quality of work you can do with a VERY modest set of tools (I think he barely has £100 worth of kit in most videos) and isn't trying to pressure you into buying one of his £300 dovetail saws every 10 seconds.

Yes. It's like in the early days of the internet when people did stuff and shared information for the pure love of it rather than always having to make money out of it.

I'm Canadian. Or rather I'm duel nationality, Canadian and British.

Rob Cosman sounds 99% pure Canuk to my ear, it'd be 100% except he's east coast and my family are all west coast!

I meant more the fact that he has a US flag on his apron and the whole vet thing rather than his accent.
Maybe the whole "thank you for your service, sir!" is just as big a thing in Canada as in the US, eh?
(NB I'm not particularly bothered by any of this, just curious ☺)

That I don't get. Normally, everyone wants to differentiate themselves from their neighbours. So Canada celebrates the monarchy because the US is a republic. Australia is borderline republican so New Zealand seem that bit more monarchist.

I guess it's just sensible business practise by Rob Cosman, I imagine his market is overwhelmingly south of the border.

True.
BTW I always thought that due to your training (and, probably, my own assumption) you, Custard, were as English as tuppence!

You're not far wrong, I've lived in this country most of my life. I sometimes think about going back, but Vancouver house prices are crazier than London and the weather's certainly no better!

I have spent a lot of time in Canada and have lived in Vancouver and I would give my wife's left arm to be able to live there (ignoring the fact that I can't afford it). I'm a country boy and I don't like cities generally but Vancouver is not like other cities. I wouldn't live in London under any circumstance.

An electrician (Cornish) who did some work for has been back here for a couple of years after fifteen years living in Canada with a good business and his Canadian wife. He said he couldn't wait to get back, Canada was not the nice easy going place we imagined it to be, and that what was good is being very quickly ruined by ...... no, I won't drift into politics.
The landlord of my 25 year local up to 5 years ago came from Toronto and has now retired (still holding Canadian citizenship) - there is no way can he afford to go back.
