Just searched on this but the last post was in 2007. Wish the prices were the same, but never had this need before and am looking at several £k for about 3 posts etc etc.

Anyone recently had this sort of work and wish to comment on how it went etc?

Had my front right tooth done 5 years back. Process is not painful but you get some very odd pressure sensations when they are removing/drilling/fixing. I found massive differences in cost between dentists, I ended up driving to a dentist an hour away as he worked out about 30% cheaper, had great reviews, and was going to use the same technology as my own dentist. I was also recommended a Harley street guy from a well-off acquaintance and he wanted twice the price of my dentist, so 3x that of what I ended up paying! 5 years on and I have a minor issue with the crown, the implant is fine, but I want the crown removed and replaced as it has cracked. I now live 10 hrs from the original dentist and non of my local dentists use the same implant technology, as a result I'm struggling to get anyone to take the crown off in case they find an issue with the implant and can't fix it. I'd suggest you find out what the current leading implant brand is and make sure you go to a dentist that uses it. Aesthetically and functionally its a great solution to replace teeth, you do however loose sensation in the tooth which takes a little getting used to.

A guy at work said one of his new implants was going to end up at £6 - £7K, is that still the going rate?

Three quotes so far from £5.5K to £7K, but have two or possibly three appointments next week before I decide who to go with. The process can take up to six months depending how long implants take to settle. How long did yours take Fitz?

Take a holiday to Turkey, get the work done there for a small fraction of UK costs.

Dont know how much you are having done, last year here in Cyprus i had two false teeth permanently implanted for 400 euro (£318). If I had needed more I would have gone north.

We are going to Budapest this weekend for my wife to have 3 dental implants. The cost is one third of the treatment in the UK.

There are so many good, as well as bad reports of going abroad for treatment just for lower costs. Although the cost hear is far more than I would like to pay, I would never run the risk of it 'possibly' going wrong with no redress on the practice abroad, or a load of problems and additional costs to try and sort out if it did. There will always be arguments for and against, but I will not change my mind about this.

They are outrageously expensive but very comfortable - almost feel like your own teeth. If you can afford them I recommend you get them.

Mine cost £3.2k in 2009, Harley street guy wanted nearly £6k. Mine was a little complicated as I had originally snapped my tooth in half at the age of 9 in 1984. I had a screw inserted into the root of the old tooth and a crown on top. That lasted me for 25 years but eventually failed due to bone loss around the tooth root, and associated gum recession. So I had the old tooth removed, and had to have a bone graft (some type of power) into the root cavity to make sure there was enough depth for the implant. The gum was sewed over and a temporary bridge fitted, this was left for 6 months to enable the new bone to 'set'. I then had a hole made for the new implant, sewed over and left for 6 weeks. Then opened up and had the post and crown fitted. I'd say it took at least a year for the implant to settle down. I actually currently have an issue that the tooth to the side of my implant is wobbly, which I think is due to the historic bone loss in at the original tooth site, as I also have some gum recession. I also looked into going abroad but chose not to as mine was not a simple, whip out the old tooth, bang an implant in the cavity, attach a post and crown and bobs your uncle. If it had been then I would have seriously considered it!

Sorry if that was too much detail.

Thanks Fitzroy, not too much detail and that may be what I will have as one of the dentist seen said that may be a possibility, but would need to check first. With 25 years life, that will see me out as I'm 75 now and would not be having this if I had not broken two crowned teeth that held a 5 in all bridge. I don't want to only have a plate, so this is the way I need to go, with a plate as a temporary measure whilst the treatment proceeds. Prices and types of implant have progressed as well as the costs.

Damn, never thought about the Dremel. As long as I can get the thing set up vertically in my gob,....... Nahhhhhh it would take forever with it's speed, but thanks for the tought.

The ten teeth across the top-front of my mouth are all one big implant - 10 separate cappings on a metal moulding (palladium?) which is bolted to 4 10BA sockets set into the bone of my upper jaw. I've had trouble all my life with my top-front teeth - had fillings, then individual cappings, then bridges, even tried false teeth (ugh) - whatever I had always ended up infected and falling out. The surgeon who did my implants was drilling for the sockets when he found a cyst buried deep within the bone, which was invisible to x-rays. He reckons that it was the root cause of my problem, been there for years flaring up at intervals. I had the implants about 10 years ago, and haven't looked back since - so nice to be able to just eat at long last. Don't ask what they cost though, I'd rather not be reminded...
