It's a braced and primed panel for oil or acrylic painting, you're looking at a world where a tube of paint can easily cost £100 for certain pigments.

I'd never pay that myself because I've always made my own panels and stretched my own canvases, but a professional artist working to deadlines, or a hobbyist with more money than sense? Sure, doesn't seem unusual.

Bear in mind that decent quality plywood doesn't come cheap these days, and someone's done all the prep work ready for an artist to paint straight on it. If you're selling paintings for thousands what harm is a few hundred quid for the surface?

Nah selling cabinets and furniture is a lot easier than selling paintings unless you're exceptionally lucky!

The artist's supplies market is quite specialised and very well saturated already, though if you've got a few local artists it wouldn't hurt to put out some feelers if you're interested in making and preparing canvases, panels etc. - if they're after unusual shapes or sizes it could be fairly lucrative.

I’ve always considered art to be a thing of extremes. To command top price you either need to be very good or very bad. Both seem to work. Unfortunately with cabinets it helps to be very good.

Ha I like that, clearly I was too good to make it as a bad painter, let's just forget that I wasn't good enough to be the other sort 😂
