hi my axminster awvsl 900 lathe has given up .. it appears the motor is at fault and needs replacing. Being only 15 month old and not used a lot, I am not too happy. Guarantee was only a year, apart from axminster at £80 is there anywhere else that supplies motors . thanks tony

have you spoken to axi- 3 months out of warranty is hardly fit for purpose.

Axy have a 3 year warranty now and have had for a while??? Not to appear to not feel for your situation but this is one of the reasons why I place a premium on the Record Power 5 year warranty. I have no doubt whatsoever the reason Axy went to 3 years was to better compete with RP for bigger machine tools.

You say the motor is faulty, what defect does it exhibit?
Does it just sit and hum when you try to run it?
Does it spin up if you give the chuck a start spin by hand?

The most common fault is that the Start/Run capacitor has failed. If this is the case a replacement should be available for less than £5.00 delivered.

As Bob says above Axi have a 3 year warranty
And even if they didn't my experience is that they give good customer service.
Phone Axi

yes it hums and tries to start. so i took the belt off it then spins freely but can be stopped easily but placing a piece of wood on the pulley. it has no torque. what do you think????? thanks tony

I would look to the capacitor being at fault. They can go any time, but 15 months is a bit low. My experience of Axminster is their customer services are fantastic. Telephone staff are very friendly and helpful.

Under EU law faulty goods have a minimum 2 years guarantee, under the sale of goods act (england and wales) up to 6 years, goods have to be fit for purpose so a £300 lathe should be expected to last a few years legally Axi should repair/replace faulty part.I have a excellent article stating consumer rights stuck to inside of kitchen cupboard door from the daily mail which I refer to in the event of any disputes over faulty goods now.

+1 for that.

Warranty is purely for the customers' convenience and as an indication of a brand's quality. Alan is spot on - even without Axi's good name, you have a right to expect an item to be fit for purpose and replaced / repaired.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Its all relative I would not expect a £5.99 made in china kettle to last a couple of years but I would expect a £50 made in Europe one to last me at least 6 years

That' typical of a failed capacitor, a ten minute job to replace, if Axminster can't/won't supply you with a replacement then they are easy enough to get, just make sure the one you get is the same or higher voltage rating and is a RUN Rated component. (as opposed to just start rated)

If it is the start capacitor you should be able to press the start button with one hand and spin the chuck with other to get it going please make sure your not holding the chuck just spin it. i had this problem with my axminster belt sander but was able start it by this method until the new capacitor arrived.

+1 for capacitor. I had the same with my ELU 180b lathe. I could even get it to run in reverse which was handy.lol

a big thanks to you all for good advice... bought a capacitor ,fitted it and now works, £8 well spent. now I can finish the bowl I started.
