Sounds good value, and I'm seriously tempted. Can anyone tell me how the two different thread sizes are accommodated? Is there a 1X8 thread in the chuck body, with a threaded adaptor down to 3/4 X16, or are both these threads on adaptors secured in to the chuck by some means?
(Reason for asking is that there does not seem to be a Myford (1.1/4 x 12) adaptor for these, so I would need to rethread the body, or make an adaptor to fit the Mystro)

one of several that bear a remarkable resemblance

but at that price!

Thanks for the comments, folks. They lead to a slightly different question. Is there enough "meat" on the various clones around the 1" threaded portion to take a 1.1/4" thread, do you reckon? Or is there a bit of the mechanism that would get damaged in the process?

I have a 1 1/4 tpi insert in my small chuck, and the bigger one can take a 1 1/2 inch insert. If this is a clone of the Vicmark, then you could probably make that size insert for it, or for me, not having any metal skills other than grinding, I would buy the proper insert.

Graham, do you recommend this chuck

Due to my current status as a Registered Professional Turner I will not 'recommend' chucks or other tools. This has nothing to do with the merits or otherwise of the Dakota chuck.

I can say that I have been using one on an M330 Axminster lathe today, fitted with Sorby 'nylon' jaws shaped to meet my requirements.

I learned today that the Dakota apparently does not have sufficient thread to allow it to 'register' on a Vicmarc lathe (not sure which one) headstock spindle thread. The owner had overcome the problem by fitting a plastic collar.

Me too (Supernova)Nick...
I will check but I seem to remember that they fit the Dakota... I rarely change jaws as each chuck is set up for a particular use

Hi All

Just joined but have been lurking for some time. Inspired by what I have read and seen I brought myself a CCL on special offer from Axminster. I have not turned anything yet as I am modifying the stand to make it heavier and higher.

Having seen this post I got one of these chucks from Rutlands, screwed it in on and... It is well eccentric, about 4mm out of round. To confirm earlier posts the body is threaded 1" x 8tpi but the chuck body is not deep enough to get anywhere near the register. I tried it with and without the large washer supplied but no joy. The 3/4" X 16tpi adapter supplied looks to have a well formed thread and register.

It is on it's way back to Rutlands for a refund!

Looks like I will have to spend a bit more on a chuck that fits.

Hello John, and welcome to the forum (and the woodturning section..) :D
Bad luck with the chuck :( ,hope you find something that fits properly - I have the Axminster Clubman K10 on a CCBL lathe, and am very happy with it;if I was getting another, would certainly consider the Sorby Patriot chuck also - it looks well-engineered,and it's British!

Better luck with whatever chuck you choose, then you can join in and post pictures of your work (spam trap applies until you've made three posts)

Thanks for the welcome to the forum. I think I will have to make the effort to get to a decent woodturning store so that I can compare items. I still need some turning tools as well, only trouble is there is nothing nearby.

It looks like I will have to make more posts so that my signature url sorts itself out !

Hello John and welcome :D

There is a big wood show on next weekend at Stoneleigh which will have loads of turners and turning companies their,so if you can make it,it should be worth it. :D

Welcome to the forum Cign, sounds like you fell foul of poor service being supplied with a chuck with an inappropriate interface for your machine.

CHJ and Paul.J Thanks for the welcome.

I'm not so sure it was poor service, rather a lack of knowledge on my part. I assumed in error that any 1" x 8tpi threaded chuck would work, completely overlooking the fact that the register behind the thread is in fact the most important bit. Axminster describe the lathe spindle nose as being TO4M I have no idea if this is an industry standard. Any guidance appreciated

These are the recognized dimensionsfor the various 'standards' (taken from an Axminster catalogue)

It is quite common for cheaper chucks (both wood and metal) to have the correct thread but insufficient depth to allow the chuck to seat on the register faces correctly.
