Cutting groove with rebate cutter on router.

Is there any reason not to gut a groove across the end grain in oak with a bearing guided rebate cutter? I was thinking of adjusting depth of cut by going down the bearing sizes.

Hand-held, not in table.

Depends on how wide the wood is, it should be possible on a wide plank or ganging up the pieces.

Set up and test on some scrap and see if you feel comfortable.

The only problem I see is how to stop the speltching. If that does not matter then it should work just fine.

You could always use a japanese type cross cut saw and chisel or route out the waste.

Ah, that's plan B, I'm rather hoping to keep it there and find a quicker easier plan A.

Thanks for the help guys, particularly the speltching, must remember to go one way not the other, only one edge will be seen.
