As you’re only doing a small radius profile then I think stopped kerfs is the way to go. If the profile was more elaborate then we’d make a former, laminate up the square section portion of the skirting and then add solid timber to the top section for the moulded area. Depending on what’s trying to be achieved we may steam bend the solid timber to the curved shape or cut it into the curved shape from a wide board or segments. It gets really interesting when you have to mould it and then get it to curve in two planes simultaneously (curved arch that went around a corner!!). Steam bending is not as difficult as you might think and can be an easy way to force timber to take on a curve, ideally start with timber that is fairly green rather than bone dry or it’ll take a lot of time.

It's difficult to say until the existing wooden floor is all sanded back and then stained. I believe the Client is planning on having it quite dark from what she has stated.

Whatever the colour/shade she chooses, this curved skirting will be finished in the same way.....

I decided to go with the lamination method....

Here a a few pictures I took of the skirting in situ and the form I made to clamp the 5mm thick strips of softwood.

I've just got to sand the wooden plugs down now and the finishing will all be done by the flooring refurbishment company.
