I am not one to sign petitions but this is just plain stupid. The government apparently wants to class craftwork as 'non creative.' If any else finds this as degrading and ridiculous as I do the address for the petition can be found here

Pete

Signed.

According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, 'creative' means, "creating; able to create; inventive, imaginative, showing imagination as well as routine skill...." So if you design and make, by dictionary definition, you're creative.

Some years ago, Cornwall Woodturners offered to mount a weekend exhibition on a quiet winter weekend in the Tate Modern in St. Ives. They sent us a letter thanking us, but turning us down on the grounds that woodturning couldn't possibly be considered artistic.
So now I know - it's neither creative nor artistic!

Another example showing how the government are "out of touch" of normal people imo.
Petition signed.

This is just another example of bureaucrats who don't have a clue what the real world is about.

Petition duly signed and shared on Facebook.

regards

Brian

I've signed it, but I don't understand what are the real mplications if craftwork was reclassified as non-creative. Is it just hurt feelings or something more material?

As you might imagine, this has annoyed a few people. For a bit of the story behind it:

The consultation
The Crafts council view
And the thoughts of Robin Wood, chair of the Heritage Crafts Association

It seems that the main reason for the omission is that as a rag tag bunch of sole traders and part timers, craftsmen are too hard to count and pidgeon hole. Although there is some excuse about us being predominantly occupied by manufacture, rather than the creative process, which one could take offence at.

The likes of Potters and turners, for example, start with a raw material and an idea but may not know exactly what the finished product will look like. Each is likely to be unique.

Furniture makers could turn out bespoke (creative) or pre-designed (manufactured) work.

But what about craft workers who just turn out dozens, or hundreds, of the same items from a pattern or design. Would these be considered to be creative or just manufactured?

and now you've all signed up to it giving your names and addresses they can investigate whether or not you make an income out of your 'hobby' and such tax you accordingly.

nice

I shouldn't worry about that. You'd need joined-up government for that to happen. Government hasn't been joined-up in Britain since about World War Two.
