Why anyone would set up a woodwork forum such as this, is it a commercial venture or is it for some altruistic reasons and purposes?

DW: are you talking about this forum, or the new 'splinter' forum? If you are talking about that other forum.... Then as far as I can see there is no commercial reason. I think you'll find that the people who setup that forum where disillusioned by this. That does not mean that all the members there are disillusioned with this forum. A Moderator of this forum once said that both forums could exist in parallel.

Does any of that make sense?

Do you mean forum in general terms? As in Why would anyone set up a forum? If so the answer is surely in order to fill a perceived void or possibly in support of a commercial enterprise or product.

Cheers Mike

I reckon this forum was set up for altruistic reasons - After all, it's nice to be able to chat with likeminded folk and get help and advice.

The other splinter forum is most definitely paid for by advertising... I particularly like the way that the adverts try to sell you whatever the thread's related to. The whole business model for that ProBoards place seems to be based on making thier money from Google Ads... Get your forum for free as long as you don't mind incessant adverts all over the place... Pay if you want the adverts to go... Perhaps I should get into that market too.

Adblock plugin for firefox works for me. I see no ads at all - hurrah.

Hmm this thread is trying to sell me McNuggets? :D

Is this thread turning into a google ads experiment ?
:)

Cheers Mike

I certainly do object, I take the view that if I want information about a product I will take action to find it, I don't want adverts served to me particularly ones which jump about, flash, obscure parts of the site I'm trying to use, hijack my browser, pop up, pop under yada yada yada. Adverts? No thanks.

Yeah could agree with some of your comments but, supposing it a completely new product never seen on this planet before do you still object to being informed and suppose its a new supplier who is competing against the big boys and cant afford to advertise his product in the traditional way?

I'm with Mike here, I detest adverts as well - Rob

I'm right there with you on all of that - Adverts are just plain annoying to me. I've stopped watching broadcast TV because the advert breaks are so long, I forget what program I was watching and go and do something else instead. I've been using Firefox + AdblockPlus for a few months and it's a great solution, but every now and again, I accidentally open a site in another browser and then the ads bug me again.

I've been trying really really hard not to get drawn into that whole thread/spat/debacle and decided that I wouldn't say anything about it. Here's some nice pictures to look at instead.

Hmm..........there's almost a subliminal thing going on with your post
You're not a Sun reader, are you

I just imagined DW was talking about the general whys and wherefores of setting up A. N Other web forum. No one would possibly be wanting to go back over old ground yet again would they - being contentious for the sake of it ? that would be plain daft.
:)
