What do you pay per unit for your Electricity, I have searched the net and can't seem to get any results, I reckon I pay too much or is everyone the same.

I am with Atlantic on Economy 7 no standing charge

The first 225 units 19 Pence per unit then 14.5 pence thereafter

Night units between 12:00 and 7:30 at 6.15 Pence per unit

I would be interested to know what other companies are charging

Uswitch is probably the best place to compare, don't know if they show prices of units though. You will also find that the prices vary for a single supplier dependent on where they are, they will be more expensive in their "home" areas than in others, eg EDF in London will be more expensive than EDF in Leeds, that's why they always ask for your postcode

I find it all so confusing. We got an astronomical bill the first year we was here, so I switched to British Gas. But it still seems to be silly high and that's after disconnecting the electric under floor heating in the bathroom, cutting the plug off the tumble dryer and removing the electric heater from the workshop. Baffles me.

To be honest i don't think you'll ever know, because they all use their own
methods in which to confuse the buyer.
The only way to get cheaper electric,is to give them access to your bank
account to do as they please DD.
Stangely enough i found a standing charge a cheaper way, as you see what the cost is as oppossed to x units at this and x unit at that.

Well your not alone Martin, I pay more for my gas and electric than I do for my mortgage each month!! I am with N power and have been all this year as they told me they could beat my old supplier Scottish Power. Of course we have had some astronomical rises since then and I now pay over £180 per month!! We are not at home most of the day as SWMBo and my lad are at Uni and I work most of the day. I have been told that a lot of people are beign ripped off by the power companies as it was on Watchdog a little while ago. I am going to give them a call in the New Year and mention the program to see if anything changes.

I suppose what I was hoping for was for some of you to disclose the price you are paying, because I don't trust what sites like Uswitch are saying, they never tell me what I will be paying per unit.

Anyway, don't get too drunk tonight and don't jump in to the Town Hall square fountain in these sub zero temperatures.

I'll wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR now, no doubt I will be incapable later :eek:ccasion5:

   thats £70 more than me, i'm finding myself running after the rest of the family switching off lights, I have never been so mean, they call me Humbug

Mailee, because of where you live you're probably best taking npower for gas and one of the other leading brands for leccy. BG are in general pretty expensive for gas

That's amateur stuff, they should have one light bulb each and take it from room to room  Must be the Scotsman in me

Cheers, Paul :D

Costs us 10.713 pence per KW hour from the Utility Warehouse if that's any help.

Will be interesting to see what others pay.

Cheers, Paul :D

I make them use candles, and I hold the matchbox.

I'm so mean that I take my iron pills to the scrapyard, I even wake up in the night to see if I've lost any sleep.

Rich.

I pay quarterly, my last bill just a few days ago was £261 the bill before that £163 so I think my yearly bill could be £850-£950 ish or £70-£80 a month

I'm on a standard tariff, no economy deals. just 13.04p a unit plus a standing charge of £10.63p per quarter.

It would seem that if you have economy 7 you pay a higher standard rate. Also, if you don't pay any standing charge there is a premium to pay, e.g. the first 225 units at a higher rate, which in my case equals £11ish.

This time last year I was using 19 units per day, this year its down to 12 units per day, and thats down to changing to low energy lighting and acting like Scrooge

What I find a tad annoying is that when they hike up the prices, they arbitrarily stick their finger in the air and apportion the (estimated yet again) bill into pre-and post- price rise. I can't think of any other industry that is allowed to fleece their customers in this way.

Roger, you should live here, JEC are putting the cost of electricity up by 25% this week. The best bill I had was for the last winter quarter, £460 for a two bedroom apartment.

Phil

I work in the industry and though it may not seem like it there is a huge amount of estimating/calculating/fretting that goes into price changes. Yes, there are improvements that all could make, but they do all have to turn a profit, the tricky bit comes when you talk about how much of a profit is reasonable. Company I work for has more or less the same amount of customers as at the beginning of the year, though have had a large (and expensive) amount of churn and our profits have taken a big whack this year.

You're also seeing the effect of the credit crunch if you pay by DD, most companies will now want to owe you money rather than you owe them so that they can reduce their lending amounts. As most companies buy energy up front for use up to a year later they have a very poor cash position - usually they will be in a negative cash position until at earliest end of Q2 and often well into Q3 - that's a long time to be running with a negative cash flow.

Where we suffer in relation to countries like France and Germany as the energy framework put in place by the government is rubbish. We were almost unique in adopting the climate change rules early on, hence the dash for gas and the idiotic plan to burn all of our gas in power stations for a short term gain - reduced CO2 emissions compared to coal. Whereas in Germany they still burn large amounts of coal and even lignite, which is not much better than peat. France has a very large nuclear portfolio which has shielded it from the rise in Russian gas prices.

Sorry if that turned into a bit of a ramble, but the answer is rarely a simple one

Not at all...it's good to hear from someone with actual knowledge! Your comment re the Govt energy framework is very apposite. What is it that we have ? 13 days gas reserves. France..something like 130 IIRC. Germany similar.

Mind you, you could cut and paste anything into your sentence where it says ['energy framework'],,, put in place by the Govt is rubbish.

Martin,
I'm now with eON and their prices are:

Electricity: 18.56p per kWh for the first 236 kWh each quarter and 10.64p for each kWh thereafter.

Gas: 4.661p per kWh for the first 705 kWh per quarter and 2.97p for each kWh thereafter.

Vat at 5% is added to these numbers.

The net of this is that I pay about £100 per month (4 bed detached house) for gas & electricity and am currently in credit but this should even out by end of February.

I record gas, electricity and water meter figures on the first of every month and have done so for years. When transferred to a simple spreadsheet, I can see exactly how my usage (and therefore costs) are going month by month.

At least once a year I use Uswitch to see who is cheapest and I also read Martin Lewis's weekly email on Money Saving Expert - he gives very good advice on all topics related to saving money.

As a final point, I had cavity wall insulation installed 3 months ago and have seen a drop of 20% in my gas usage compared to the same 3 months in 2007. I only use gas for heating water and the house so, though it is not particularly scientific, as the last 3 months have been pretty cold it seems to have been a good investment.

Hope this all helps your quest
