Seeing the Clock Project by Dom inspired me to have a go.

I had several clock dials, chapter rings, quartz movements etc. that I had been given some years ago but had done very little with them

I didn't have anything nearly as good as Dom's skeleton clock,but I sorted out a nice dial and went from there.

That's when the problems started. I wanted it to look like Dom's but as the dial was smaller I had to alter the proportions.

This meant that a door was out of the question.

I tried to make it a little shorter but that didn't look right. Then I found a barometer that I could put in the lower portion and below it a thermometer

That looked better, and so I started.

I didn't take any WIP pics as I used all of the ideas from Dom's thread (hope you don't mind Dom)

Anyway they would have been MIP (mistakes in progress) I couldn't believe how many I made,mostly with my measurements.

The final upshot was that the barometer chosen would not fit in the lower portion.

I then found a smaller one which would fit but as this had a thermometer incorperated in it the original idea of a seperate one was out.

I did feel at this stage that I should bin the whole idea as it wasn't coming out as I had planned.

I called in a second opinion (SWMBO) and she said she liked it and to carry on.

This is the finised item and I am more pleased with it than expected.

Very nice gwaithcoed. I'm glad if the blog was of some help. How did you joint the quaters? The finger/glue joints I used were a big headache for me and 3 mistakes meant I nearly ran out of material towards the end. I had to salvage these mistakes to make the door. As for measuring mistakes like I said in the blog I drew a full size plan so measuring mistakes at the beginning required only a rubber to fix. Not sure what you mean about a door not being possible. On my clock the diameter was around 9 inches but I've used the same technique on other projects to cut arcs with a diameter as low as 4 inches. Nice finish though. What did you use?

Eventually with biscuits,I did try finger jointing but had too much tear out.

Not sure what you mean about a door not being possible

Its just that I thought the carcass would be too narrow for it to look right

What did you use?

3 coats of danish oil.

Hello Martin

Where do we buy the clock mechanism and face

I was very fortunate to have mine given to me. Dom had his skeleton clock from Axminster.
The clock face on mine has a hinged glass but I haven't seen any like this on the sites Pete has shown.

Still got some left and am now doing one in mahogany for a neighbour.
