A school chum friend of mine is having his 60th birthday next month and I'd like to convert a few 35mm slides to digits. Can anyone help at all? I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks

Roger

Anyone with a flat-bed scanner and a transparency adaptor should be able to help you there, though if you want the best quality possible, you want a full-on slide scanner (4000 dpi)

I have a scanner, but alas, no transparency adaptor... then again, transparency adaptors are just a traingular box with a couple of mirrors to reflect the light from the scanner and ensure the slide is lit from behind. I could probably knock one up in my shed in about 20 mins.

Roger, I used to have a slide/film scanner - great bit of kit, but anyways, most high-street photography places should be able to do this for you these days.

Are they mounted slides? I'm happy to give it a go - I have a transparency adapter for my flatbed scanner. But it can't do mounted slides as far as I can work out.
Cheers

The other way of course is to use a slide adapter to fit onto your camera which allows you to retake the picture, possibly an easier, if slightly low tech solution. In my experience quality is as good as using a cheaper flat bed scanner, but marginally less so than using a dedicated film scanner.

I have a slide adapter somewhere if you want to borrow one.

Cheers,

Alan

Try a photo shop in town, failing that give me a PM; I've borrowed a proper film scanner from a friend to do some of mine and could easily fit a few extra in.

Perhaps you have one of those old slide adaptors that fit to the end of your 35mm camera, Take shots of your slides, have them printed and then you can scan them the normal way. Beats sending those embarrassing slides to the printers.

Roger,

I have a proper 35mm film scanner that would do it. More than happy to scan them for you provided you are not talking about a complete collection :)

Basicly the same principle as my old pentax copying slides to film. but I shall have to remember that one using a digital camera. (mind you my canon scanner copies film and slides (in frames roger if not too many)

There's no doubt that the quickest and easiest is to pop them down to your local minilab. They will charge you about 70p each and it should take no more than a couple of days.

I don't see any point in photographing the slides and then scanning the resultant prints, you'll be two generations away from the original. If you want to make prints for scanning on a flat bed then just take the slides into your local minilab and they can make prints direct from the slides, but this is still a step too far IMHO. Just get them to scan the slides for you.

Brian

Thanks everyone.

Mark - I'd like to take you up on your offer as there may be quite a few slides to do! I'll contact you outside the forum
Cheers
