Computer Monitor connector

I think I'm trying to do something that's impossible, but thought one of you genii might know an answer.....

In my workshop I have a DVD player which I run through an amp and speakers for mp3's, cd's etc. I also have a spare flatscreen monitor stored there.....the monitor only has the regular computer-> monitor socket and the DVD player has an S video socket and a scart socket.

Any way I can get a DVD to play through that monitor?

Not sure of my ground here Chris, but think that the monitor needs to be driven by a graphics card in a pc in order to work. It doesn't operate on it's account like a tv would.

If that's correct (?) then you might be able to hook the dvd through a pc to the screen, but don't know that that would help any !!!

Hi Chris,

I think one way to achieve your goal would be to use a "VGA converter box" like this one from Maplin which is priced at about £70.

As has been pointed out already, you could potentially use a PC for the job, so long as you've got the appropriate video inputs or a DVD drive in the PC. However, I wouldn't recommend a PC unless you have additional uses to put it to - most are bulkier, more complicated, and more power hungry than the converter box. PC's also have more fans to suck in the dust!

Thanks for your speedy replies folks, I thought I was missing something - as in: not really possible, except at great expense.

I think I should bring forward the plans for a Laptop - that way I can do the above, ie - play a DVD on it and do some drawings in an idle moment and demo them to customers.....( oh Mrs Scrums will be pleased ! )

What's a decent spec' for a laptop that just needs to play a DVD and do a bit of SketchUp ?

Setting aside the technical solutions offered for your problem Chris, what is bothering me is this;

You go to the time and expense of setting up a lovely professional woodworking workshop.

You and your family's future is dependent upon you making a roaring success of your business.

And you want to sit on your arriss all day watching DVD's!!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

It's bad enough having a puter in the workshop and wasting working time on the forum!
