Slightly off topic, but in the dim and distant past when I was at school, on DofE expeditions we were given army compo rations. The canned mashed potato powder was foul to eat, but blown in a cloud across the gas cooker, made a wonderful display of spontaneous explosive fire. Happy days........

As a rough guide, would it be fair to say that the concentration of dust required for an explosion is higher than most people would find comfortable to work in? If that's the case the issue would be fairly self-limiting.

Regarding the potential overloading, could the extraction be wired so that turning it on kills the power to the heating? That might be a simple way of managing the load demand.

After due consideration, I have decided to get some more power to the garage and am going to ask for quotes for a sepearte ring main. Hopefully that will then enable me to have what I need in the way of heating and not worry about equipment . Thanks for your help guys.

Would a small generator be powerful enough to run your tools allowing you to use your existing power for heating?

That's Ok, just had a thought about reversing the problem, i.e. extra power for the tools rather than the heater.

My garage / workshop is about 6.5m x 3.5m
We put in a 7kw wood burner and the place gets so hot i have to open the doors.
It's great. Hours and hours of cutting, No explosions and i'm still alive :)
It runs on off cuts.

Looks good, but my space is limited as the cars still go in at night. I'm messing around trying to set planer blades but it takes for ages as I'm not used to it yet. Seems that the method of three grub screws to adjust the blades could be improved.

Malcolm the electric oil filled radiators are pretty good BUT I bought one that was supposed to be cheap to run BUT had a nasty shock when i received my next electricity bill and it was double the previous bill! we queried it and it was correct the radiator was responsible and even more shocking was the fact i only used it for around 5 hrs a day.
I have had my home central heating extended into my workshop now and all doors and windows have been replaced with double glazing, at the back of my workshop is a small office which is now my scrolling room and i can close the linked door to the large workshop so needs less heating.
