Hi Folks
Finished another plane today. A coffin smoother made from Pau Rosa. Iron bedded at 50 degrees and a tight mouth, it cuts real nicely.

I have some more photo's here.....

5 hours eh? So in a 40 hour week that's 8, at £......

Still not quitting the day job?

Nice plane Phil.

Wow ! Beautiful wood Phil and lovely workmanship too.

Great to see and inspirational to see what's possible.

Cheers, Paul. :D

I like the choice of wood Philly on this one, impressed with the finished articles you have made recently but am a bit dismayed that they are not coming off the bench in matching sets

Thanks for the comments, Gents :D
Chris - I'm nowhere near able to chop out these by hand. So I'm experimenting with various lamination methods. Works well so far-and quick
Nick - you're getting me thinking now. If only I had three months advance orders the day job could disappear
Paul - thanks! The timber sure is pretty :D
Chas - funnily enough, everyone wants one. I do plan a complete set - just need to work out what "complete" means....
Back to the bench....
Phil :D

Hi Philly

That is a gorgeous looking plane, that works just as well as it looks. Where is the iron from?

It certainly stirs up the lust to build another...

Regards from Perth

Derek

Thank you, thank you!
Derek, I made the iron from some O1 tool steel. Heat treated it and tempered it myself. Works pretty well - I either have got lucky or it isn't too difficult with decent steel stock
Hack saw, files, and a Mapp gas gun - viola, one custom iron :D
Philly :D

You are getting better and better Phil. That is stunniong, the wood is beautiful and the plane looks really well made

In my book 'complete' has to include a compass plane.

This is really bad.

I've already decided that this month is to be the Month of the Rasp and now you've got me looking at woodies and thinking Yum.

Superb

Beautiful plane. And the custom iron is the icing on the cake. I've used an oxy acetylene torch for cutting, but have never tried mapp. Is the equipment expensive and are there any differences from OA?

You can do exactly the same thing with an oxy acetylene set up and if you already have one there would be no need to get a Mapp gas torch. According to the internet, Mapp gas has a 5300 °F (2900 °C) flame temperature, compared to 5800 °F to 6300 °F (3200 °C to 3500 °C) flame temp for OA.

Mapp gas can be used for brazing, soldering, flame-hardening, and many other applications and has the advantage that it doesn't requeire a separate oxygen cylinder - much like a propane torch, but this does limit a bit what you can do with it compared to OA. In the UK you can get disposable Mapp gas cylinders and a torch for under £100 whereas a cheap OA set up would be a lot more. Apparently in Australia Mapp gas is known as RazorGas.

Hope this helps,

Steve

 Apologies Philly - got a bit carried away replying to JesseM and forgot to say what a lovely plane you've made. Had a look at the link but no WIP photos. Would be interested to see what it looked like before the sides were stuck on.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks Chaps!
Steve - thanks for the gas info! Got carried away making the plane so forgot to take photo's....
I'll make another soon and record all the gory details :D
Frank - yup, laminated - Philly Style
Cheers
