I've just recently started to make a big woodie but really can't decide :? on whether I ought to have a closed or open tote on it. What do others prefer? - Rob

On the assumption that the old guys knew what they were doing, all old wooden fore plane and jointers (i.e. over 18") had quite small closed totes, so you should too. Unless someone comes up with good facts and reasoning to the contrary.

FWIW, i've just asked Philly to think about a 24" jointer, to be made in the same style as his Jack (which I have), which has an open tote. But that was just personal preference.

Cheers

BB - I think you're spot on the money. I just made a closed tote and it didn't look right. I now realise the reason why was that I made it too big, so have just gone back to the 'shop and redrawn a much smaller one...looking much better. Woodie will be 28" long BTW...will post a thread later - Rob
