Don't forget you can take off the moveable stops and bolt two sash-cramps together, at varying positions. There will be a screw-head at both ends, but you can vary the cramp length.

For that reason, (as explained by the tool dealer), I bought four, five-footers, thirty years ago. I've used them ever since. Ok, I knew the salesman had doubled his commission, but in the end he did me a great favour, when I came to make a bed! Oh and yes, I have added more cramps since!

I did find out a way of making Record sash cramps more 'adaptable, but until I can get 'a round tuit' I'll keep it to myself, when I can maybe post WIP.

One thing we all agree on about cramps is we can never have enough! Of any variety.

They work out very cheap if you have a tame plumber who can get you the bar for free

Galvanised conduit isn't all that expensive Lurker. If you make sure you have the right size. It comes in varying lengths and all it needs is a hand-hacksaw, and a file. Unfortunately all the conduit I have is Imperial! and it's too late to worry about it now!

I've got some of the Record ones, but the better set I have (Marples I think, but they're not branded and I did buy them 30-odd years ago!) has a diagonal slot on both the ends, and a pilot hole too, for drilling up bars quickly. The advantage of the diagonal slots (for the pins) is that as you tighten, the heads bed down against the wood of the bar, meaning, as long as the bar is parallel, they stay square.

Might well have been Paramos, perhaps? I have a couple of them and much prefer them to the Records for that very reason. Not sure how good the modern versions are compared; be interested to hear what you think.

Paramo - quite possibly. I've an order going into D&M I hope today, so will be adding at least one more set, I hope . :lol:

I'll do a comparison if it's of interest, but TBH, it's most likely the moulds, if anything, that will have worn over the years - they must have made millions by now. The old ones are pretty true and tighten down nicely square, but the bar is a big factor in that too. We'll see...

Talking about older cramps...Woden are excellent if you manage to find any. I managed to get hold of a couple of decent pairs at PFT last year and with a little cleaning up to remove all the gunk and goo, they're really very good - Rob

I ordered a set of 6 dakota clamps* in Oct 09. Delivered last week. Couldn't resist at a tenner each.
They seem very similar to Record ones I've used in other folks workshops but I'm nay expert. I guess it'll take a few years hard use to find out if the quality is good enough.

I bought a couple of sets, with the idea of using them in a similar way to your use of pipe clamps for the NFWBench.

I was thinking of using a pair as a 'tail-vice', not having much room to make a bench with something sticking out too far at the tail end; as would a tail-vice...

So I have four, which I just use as cramps atm!

I've had them lying around now for some time. It turns out i have eight sets of them. They are the Rutlands ones i think Dekota DKL20's.

The reason i didn't use them for the Fandangled work bench is that it would of had to have been even deeper then it was. Already my bench is 40 inches high so I would of been on my tippi toes if i keep adding to it. I suppose i can cut down the cabinets under it but, well you know. It is what it is, I hate having so many different kind of clamps it looks messy, so i'm going to stick with the pipe clamps. So The DKL20's are for sale. I haven't a clue what they are worth and localoak has first dibs as he PMed me. If he doesn't want them i'll make a new post so as not to highjack this one.

You could always araldite some teflon shims inside the 'U' where the battens go.

Leave a space that's just wide enough for flat steel bar (say 5mm thick) and drill to suit. More permanent than a wooden bar, and not so clumsy looking maybe?

As it is well known amongst woodworkers- you can never have enough clamps / cramps but what is less well known is enough of the right size / type :? DAMHIKT
When I started out for myself many moons ago :? I only had a few G clamps - 4 and 6" plus a couple Record 135s [4']as time went by I increased my collection with small F clamps [ 6"] then 10" ones and a few old Sargents, [6'] got lucky there as I got the extension bars too [4']
After a trip to the States, I was introduced to the infamous PONY PIPE clamps.

Since then I have build my collection up even further and now have the DEEP THROAT pipe clamps too

At the last look, I have 4 x 3' , 4 x 5', 4 x 6' , 2 x 8' and 100 x 10" + 80 x 6" F clamps, and then there are the Speed clamps in HDPR now made by everyone, these I got from Würth in the following sizes ; 2 x 150mm , 4 x 300mm, 4 x 600mm and 6 x 800mm. At the same time the sales rep did a deal on some DEEP REACH HEAVY FORGED BESSY'S and I got 10 of in the deal.

So, I think I have enough , BUT NOT TRUE. There are times when I have had to improvise especially when on site. So I have a box load of ratchet straps , including ones for laying laminet flooring, the odd 1m F clamp for light weight work and loads more pipe connectors to make REALLY LONG pipe clamps.

So, let me WARN YOU , you will NEVER STOP buying clamps BECAUSE

No, I don't think I have room for any kind of tail vice. I explained elsewhere how I have to arrange operations!

I settled on a design I saw in F&C, by a guy called Dave Barron (Name ?)

I shan't be using the wooden leg-vice though. Just an old Paramo 18" Q/release I have. I'll be using holdfasts and no tail vice and an adjustable board on the left end of the bench to use as a planing stop when using the benchtop.

Drawers underneath because I can't stoop down to grope about in cupboards anymore!

I suppose all in all it isn't much like the Barron Bench, except for the arrangement of dog-holes and its short length. I am trying to get by with 5 foot 6 inches so there's space for a morticer/overhead router.

Lotsa work this summer then!

I think Dakota is just a Rutlands brand name. Google Fortune Extendables and you will see a vast amount of the Dakota kit there
