Well, the academic year has finished and both my brother and myself both completed our City & Guilds Level 2 Machine Made Furniture qaulification for which we both attained a distinction.

Unfortunately most of this is for jumping through hoops on the paper work side and not many marks are given to creative or high qaulity work.

You could make a very basic bog standard piece with minimal sanding, a bit of sanding sealer and polish and with all the paper work intact and you will achieve a distinction. I felt doing the paperwork and simple work should be a basic pass.In short too much emphasis in the mark structure on paperwork.

We had a maximum of 42 hours to complete our work including designing, cutting lists as well as machining. To achieve a distinction we had to profile the timber in some way either with a router or spindle moulder. You also had to have angled tenons and as mentioned earlier a finish of some sort.

My stool is made of sycamore with some american black walnut offcuts i found in the workshop, just enough. I profiled the walnut cross rail pieces using a bullnose bit on the router and a straight enge clamp. The legs were done on a spindle moulder with a jig. It was my first time using a spindle moulder and i thought it was a great machine, very versatile.

My brothers is a smaller stool made of ash with some of my spare walnut offcuts. He too used the spindle and router and made a really good jig to do his shaped tenons, i think they came out really well. He was going to use miller dowels to affix the top but to avoid any movement issues he used brackets and filled drill holes with plugs to get the effect he wanted.

I am also in the process of making a website for a me and my brother, i was going to try and master flash or dreamweaver but i couldn't be bothered. I found a website that has the templates but lets you customize to quite a high degree. At the moment it isn't finished and is the free version with adverts but it is getting there. I intend to pay for the domain and such.

It's not too bad for free, i thought i might be a bit too restrictive.

Thats all from me for the time being
thanks for your time

Firstly, congratulations to both of you on getting distinctions =D> (regardless of how the marks are distributed,it is still the highest level you can get :D )

And secondly, congratulations on a couple of lovely pieces of furniture - I particularly like the inlay work on yours and the contrasting timbers and plugs on your brothers.

Congrats to you and your brother for passing with distinction.

I also like the two stools, the contrasting wood really sets them off.

Whats your next project?

Yup - congrats, and well done - might be jumping through hoops, but you've passed the test at the highest possible level.

Well done to yoiu both.

BH, seeing that stool and knowing that you made it in one working week i can't help but feel that you are being a little unfair on the college and yourself. That is a very nice piece of work.

Nice work like the bull nose work on the larger stool. Making something similar myself and wished i had thought of that.

Yes congratulations to you both! However you feel the marks were awarded, the result is that you have acheived a qualification that many of us would like to do!

Congratulations to both of you. Such 'distinguished' works deserve the pass with distinction grade. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm almost as pleased with figuring out how to take reasonably clear photo's as i am with the stools. I've got a couple of projects to finish off that i didn't get time to do including a pair of antique style hall chairs and i want to make a blanket chest at some point. It has been a good year, having learn't how to properly use and maintain industry standard machines as well as utilizing them for projects with jigs and the like. We've gone into health and saftey and risk assessments which i think will be usefull. Next year i think i will do C & G Level 3 and see how i get on.
