The stand of the latest project is coming together now, all joints are exposed and rounded. Where the legs are straight it's easy enough to use a the LN shoulder plane but the bottom rail is a bit more tricky:

'cos there ain't enough room to get the plane in...Paul Chapman lent me his bullnose plane but that was too big as well. I was a bit worried 8-[ about doing this last night and wondered how I ought to do it. In the end I went for using skew chisels, bevel side down so the handle cleared the legs. Still got some finishing to do as what you see in the pic is straight from the tool - Rob

Paul - I've done both sides now and both have turned out good. This morning I'm doing the shaping for the main cross rail where it blends into the leg...fairly slow job, all done with some Workshop Heaven rasps (and very good they are too) sandpaper wrapped round dowels. Ought to be looking quite good by COP tonite...hopefully - Rob

Interesting solution to the problem Rob, must nip over and have a gander.

With hindsight you could have done most of the tenon with a plane before final assembly to save on some of the awkward chisel work but you would still have the wedges to do and finish off the tenons. They look well.If you hadnt a skew chisel a straight chisel bevel down would have done, but it is a fiddly job whatever way.

Doing the job before hand it becomes very difficult to judge where the tenon should start to become round as .5mm would make it undercut...disaster. A straight chisel bevel down would have worked at a pinch but a skewed chisel across the grain is much better - Rob

When I said before final assembly I was meaning push the tenon through the mortice and pencil mark it, then just plane so much not try and finish completely. And as I said thought that this would save some of the awkward chisel work, anyway a job well done the wedges really set it off.

Dennis - thanks for the good words, that particular little bit of chiseling was very tricky to do, the other joints further up the leg were much easier. Stand is coming along rather well now, got lots of the shaping done yesterday, so the final project ought to be completed quite soon...will post some pics for your consideration when done - Rob
