Ed,
We have shipped a fair number of Mortise chisels back across the pond but Ray will be happy to sell you some if he has any - but he probably doesn't - he makes them in batches and ships the batch to us.

However he also has piles of inexpensive antique mortise chisels.

Yes; these are more or less common, and fairly undesirable (as judged by price) here in the UK.

I don't think I've ever seen a s/h tool dealer try for over 10 quid.

many thanks for the nice pictures. I have some Wards pigstickers and I like them a lot. I use a primary bevel of 30° and a secondary bevel of 35°. In your opinion is this correct for this type of mortice chisels?

I am not Derek, but you will get far far better performance with a traditional grinding angle of mortise chisels - 20 degreess primary angle for penetration. and 35 degrees secondary angle for strength. (you need both grinds for the chisel to work properly)

EdK - Ray is not the best electronic communicator - his daughter (Sam)generally relays the messages which adds to the delays.

Best to phone Ray direct - he is very friendly and helpful and you can order direct from him.

Consider pointing a chisel straight down into wood and then hammering away at it. Smaller wedge == easier. However, of course, smaller wedge also equals small cutting angle and edge failure, so you game the system by putting a small secondary bevel for edge strength.

At least that is my take.

Hi

I bought all my LNs one per month and hardly noticed the cost (I don't smoke or go to pubs, and I see the cost of each LN chisel as cheaper than taking up these other pasttimes  ) -before you know it, you have all 9 :)

I started with 1/8, 1/4/ 12/"
