I'm not sure you can compare a SIP to a DeWalt , i have two SIP machines and quite a few DeWalt /Elu and the build quality between the two is miles apart .Having said that i have nick named DeWalt DeFault .

Hey Scrit and Dom, I always had you two down as pipe and slippers men but if you can lump the old DW742 around, you both must still be pretty robust
Well you've got that one wrong, for starters I don't smoke! Now where's me nice slippers, the ones with the zippers at the front and the pom-poms?

The biggest problem I have with mine is even after you have brushed it down, when you pick it up theres always a pile of rough chippings hidden somewhere just waiting to drop into me underpants....
Actually, I wear that old-fashioned accessory - a joiners' pinnie - so it doesn't happen to me. I also find that wearing my underpants inside the trousers helps a bit as well. You should try it

What have I started... a discussion into evening wear fashion

First of all thanks for everyones advice!

I figured the best route was to go for a semi decent HHCC.

I went to a couple of local tool shops, and had a look at various bits and bobs. Funnily enough the advice hardly sounded authoratative

I ended up with a Makita 5704, and I have to say I am very impressed. Despite it being "only" 1200 watts it has the thickest power cable I've seen on anything plugging into a 13amp socket.

I had a load of treated 16ft 9x2s I ordered off fleabay for my treehouse project (don't ask). Now i have 2 less of those and 4 more 4x2s 8) .
I used some sacrificial bits of timber, placed as supports on the shed floor, then rested the piece on top of that and cut using the rip fence. I don't think I'd have been able to cut this safely using a flipover / table (at least without some helpers / roller supports)., though admitedly I'd have cross cut them to 8ft before even attempting that.

The main things I noticed where how quiet it was (at least compared to all the cheapo kit), and the smoothness/ finish of the cut, I realise now why cheap tools are that

I think I owe some responses/justifications for my decisions to those kind enough to help, so here goes:

Dom: I don't think I have ever sold anything I've bought (apart from houses and cars) One of life's hoarders I guess. In terms of workshop space not an issue (yet, my hoarding knows no bounds ;))

Shulty: Workshop looks good, I think you've helped justify my purchase!

Andy: I went for a 7" jobby. I reckoned for the foreseeable future, anything over 2" ripping is highly unlikely, and if I REALLY need it my old man has a 3 Phase table saw. Did a side by side in the tool shop, and did feel like the bigger one would be cumbersome for board.

Again thanks for everyone's help.

I will make sure I post some pictures of some of my projects!!
