Just seen on TV the chicago skydeck - the tallest building in the western hemisphere - ok you say what gives?

well the obviously sadistic architect put several viewing platforms at the top which jut out of the side of the building...except they are glass boxes you can walk into... with glass floors. about 6ft high by 6ft wide by 4ft deep i'd guess.

Sorry but I have to say my b*lls just shrivled to the size of raisins just watching it let alone doing it....

those of you brave enough... heres some pics:

Oh dear - I'd want to know a lot more about the glass (how thick, how strong) and especially how it was anchored to the building before walking in to one of those glass boxes - and I have a feeling I'd always be keeping an eye out for a crack to start developing somewhere...

Hi
I would go up in a small plane.
I would go up in a balloon.
I would go up in a hang glider.
No way would I stand in that glass box.
BUT I CAN'T EXPLAIN WHY.
John

I stood on the glass floors in Auckland Sky Tower, it's not so high and they're only floors not boxes, but it was amazing how many people couldn't bring themselves to do that! IIRC they're either 4" or 5" laminated glass.

The boxes are cantilever mounted under the floor of the room itself - they actually retract into the room for cleaning - good job really - they get odd weather effects when they do, like fog INSIDE the building, which is "kinda freaky, but cool" according to the maintenance guy - "just don't fall out the hole in the wall when the boxes are pulled in as they stay open....

The glass is strong enough to take the weight of a full grown elephant, so a couple of tonnes.

Even knowing all that - I'm not sure I'm man enough to do it... even after a small plane and a parachute jump when I was younger.

Isn't Chicago known as the windy city ?

Yes, but I believe it’s because the politicians were said to be full of hot air.
I have been on the glass floor in the Toronto CN tower and it was fantastic.
I too stood on the glass floor of the CN Tower, but I soon got off when largeish kids where jumping on it!

I would rather be on the pavement with binoculars looking for cracks =P~

I love glass floors, only been on one (cant even remember where it was, UK somewhere and not that high) but was fairly amused at the people freaking out about it and not wanting to stand on it.

There is a horseshoe shaped glass floor extending out over part of the grand canyon and dozens of people at a time take great delight in scaring themselves witless walking over it.

They have one at the top of the Blackpool tower called the 'walk of faith' I have stood on that one but have to admit my knees went to jelly.

I like the glass floor at the London aquarium as you walk in. You look down and there's huge sharks swimming right beneath you.

I think in America, land of the free, the brave, and the litigation prone, you can rely on it being way. WAY overbuilt.

Go to Singapore aquarium - the sharks swim over the top of you.

Quite a few big, recent aquariums have full on tunnels to walk through.

IIRC Las Vegas has a small rollercoaster ...

... built on top of a very large sky scraper!
