Chest on Stand, fisrt impressions.....update

Have been slaving away over the last couple of days to get the stand organised. Joints are exposed and wedged M/T, everything's gone together dry at the mo'....drawers are all done and yes, if one's pushed in, most of the others will pop out - Rob

Is the rail at the back the wrong way round? There seems to be a 3 next to a 4, and a 4 on the other side. I presume it is just a highly cryptic labellings scheme.

Interesting having the DTs that way on the drawers, seen few done that way by the likes of Alan Peter's and a few others, and I really like the effect.

That looks nice, Rob. I like the exposed, wedged M/T joints as they tend to fit in well, and provide a link, with the exposed dovetail joints on the drawers. And those knobs have turned out really well - the size, shape and colour are just right. Are they from that piece of wood you showed me?

Paul - the drawer pulls are in that ebony that you had a look at when I saw you last, as will be the wedges in the M/T's and I plan to continue the ebony detailing by putting a small inlaid (12mm) ebony foot at the bottom of each leg - Rob

I like the overall look and you seem to have taken some real care over it - bet you can't wait to put some finish on it.

Two constructive points if I may:

1. I know they won't be seen much but I would put the back panels in the other way up.

2. Probably a personal thing but I think the legs look a bit heavy and even a slight taper would lighten and lift it.

Whatever - I think it will look really good.

Tim - tossed a coin about which way to put the panels, the way shown won, doesn't really make allot of difference at end of the day.

Tim and Adam - am inclined to agree about the slight heaviness of the legs, they are in fact 30mm sq but maybe 28mm would have been better....think I may plane a slight taper on each leg starting just below the short rail, have to have a ponder about that one, will draw it out first anyway on the full size plan to see what it looks like

Please keep the constructive comments coming, I'm finding them very useful , much better to get a consensus of good opinion now rather than finish the project completely, only to find someone will say with much clenching of teeth and a sharp intake of breath...'Ooooo, ah, I think that it would have been better if.......' :x - Rob

FWIW, I agree with the comment on tapering the legs - just from inside, and not the full length - but it's looking great whatever!

Looking at those legs again, following Tim and Adam's comments, and thinking about how it will look with the ebony foot at the bottom of each leg, I'm inclined to agree that a slight taper on the legs would look better.

looks great , wish I had enough good looking timber to make such a chest
But I have to say that I too find the legs a wee bit tik a double taper on the inner faces imho should sort them out, plus a curve on the under sides of all rails to " lift " them and make them seem lighter.

Still a damn fine chest on stand.

Seems fair enough - I could immediately see an image of someone's back though ie spine crease and shoulder blades which is why I suggested the other way. Either way it'll look fine

I go with the flow on tapering the inside of the legs, but wonder owing to the rails being different heights if they would look odd if the start of at the same point which would be below the lower rail, why not start the taper just below each of the rails, if you understand what I mean.

Does it need the top rails that the cabinet sits on? I would be tempted to cut the legs off level with the long front rail and have no gap front and back. It's only MHO but you did ask for suggestions. It's gonna look stunning when you put the finnish on, I don't know how you manage to wait. :lol:

I disagree. I rather like the way that Rob has put those two small curves into the two top side rails, which has enabled the front legs to be brought out beyond the front of the cabinet. Very subtle. If he were to start altering the leg and rail arrangement, that subtlety would be lost I think.

I love the drawers - Absolutely beautiful - I like the choice of wood.. I love the dovetailing on the drawer fronts and on the sides of the chest. .. I think the drawer handles are just-right for the piece. The WIP pics have been fantastic.

I'm afraid that I'm not a fan of the stand though. I agree with all the comments about the legs needing a taper, but it's the extra set of top rails spoil the look for me. I find the extra rail robs the dovetails on the side of the chest of their impact and makes the wood grain look confused where the side meets the rail.

I like wedged M/T joints, but in this case, I think the drawers are so superb by themselves that a more simple stand would do them more justice. (Sorry if that sounds a bit critical.. I've been reading too many 'interesting pieces of furniture' threads lately - It's waaaaay better than anything I could make)

Guys - thanks for all your constructive comments this evening, looking at the whole thing I do agree that the stand is a trifling heavy, so I will have a good think :-k and explore ways to make the whole thing look lighter, starting off on a full sized drawing. I will post some more pics in the course of the next few days (once I've had a play around with the concept) for your much appreciated comments. Many thanks - Rob...who'se off to ZZZZZZZ

I like it, the dovetails look fantastic. I also particulary like the fact it has quality back, a good sign of time and effort. get it oiled pronto
