I am looking at buying some cherry and saw this on the web. I need it to be 1 1/2 inch after planing. Quick question, really, is this expensive ??
I can get thinner pieces from woodyards but this seems a simple solution and is only up the road.

Given the dimensions each slab is 3840 cu inches, divided by 1728 (1 cube ft)

= 2.2 cuft @ £120 = £54 cu ft and the given dimensions are including the waney edge which will probably be waste I would guess what you are left with would be nearer £65 cu ft. Is that expensive?

Thats what i don't know. Wood is generally expensive i have found but is this very expensive or not? alternatively is 2inch cherry easy to get?

Yes, it is expensive. You'd be paying around £60 per cu ft. whereas British Hardwoods are asking £36 per cu ft.

Don't know if it makes any difference Chris, but it is French cherry at British Hardwoods. the ebay link is American.

£60 per cu ft for American Cherry is high and for 1" boards, Atkins and cripps charge around £47+vat but including delivery

You can get American Cherry at Fitchett & Wollacott's on Lenton Lane. I don't know what they charge, it's a long time since I have bought any.

The main problem is the quality, it can be very variable indeed and if someone has already picked over the stock, you will be getting very bland pieces with lots of sapwood.

The best supplier of American Cherry I know of is Whitmore's, down near Hinckley. A bit of a drive but well worth it, and they do deliver. They had some fantstic T/T waney-edged boards, good figure, good colour. More expensive than the 4-edge stuff, but excellent, just like it used to be.

I have to say i find Fitchett hilarious, Whenever i go and ask for stuff i know they are just laughing at me. I look at the price at the end and it still never makes any sense to me. I always buy rough sawn and always end up saying i need about 5m of 1inch thick board but maybe 7m if it is narrow. I am sure there is a professional way to ask but what it is i do not know. I have to say though they are quite helpfull and have yet to sell me a board with any major problems.
