Hey folks
Just received some new toys including an Ashley Iles 1/2" bevel edge chisel with a 1 1/2" crack in the handle above the ferrule.
Is this just one of those things, or should I bounce it?
Thanks
Steve

:D Sorry, no can do, John - superb response from ClassicHandTools!

When I phoned they just confirmed which chisel had the problem and said a replacement would be winging its way to me with postage prepaid to return the faulty one.

Spent this afternoon lapping the backs of the others. Almost there, too. As noted elsewhere, they do come with longitudinally concave backs, but its only slight, and easy to flatten. (I like full polished backs rather than using the Ruler Trick (TM) because I use them as a reference to cut mitres in instrument bindings)

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve

I think you have it wrong as you should use the ruler trick on plane irons and not chisels if I have it right :)

Yes, think you're right Colin.

It isn't something I use, since time isn't money with my wood related activities, and it's once per tool, most of which will probably outlast me. And I have to admit I rather enjoy the prep. It's like the kid who takes his time unwrapping his presents, I suppose.

So the man says - someone on FWW's "Knots" forum uses it on their chisels and claims it's not a problem. I ha'e me doots...

Cheers, Alf
