As I posted in the turning section, I'm making a checker board coaster for a tea pot (don't ask!)

Anyway I have the following lotions and finishes available and wondered what people would suggest as the best finish for a glossy long lasting finish:

Sanding grits up from 80 to 12,000 grit
Sanding sealer
Friction polish
Tung oil
Osmo Poly X

The board is made up of some spruce and a dark hardwood but I'm not sure what it is.

Any advice on the best ways to finish with why I've got would be welcomed.

Ok well here's what I ended up doing.

Sanded to 600 grit
Sanding sealer
The friction polish

Two loads of sealer and polish. With a gentle 600 grit sand in between.

I did post the photo elsewhere but here it is:

Be prepared to refresh the finish on a regular basis.

My two preferences for coasters are:-
  • 1. Hard Wax Oil
    2. Melamine enhanced lacquer
But only used with cups and mugs, and they still need a refresh at times.
Hot teapots might well be better on just plain wood.

Afraid the only none rework intensive coasters are those using a ceramic tile embedded.

I might give it a spray of laquer. To be honest it's going to be more decorative than used as the teapot is for a 60th anniversary present.
