Well I have given up on the Makita drill drivers after my third battery has gone down! (two Makita and one cheapo version) I have bitten the bullet and bought a De Walt Li Ion driver. It was on offer at Screwfix with two batteries for £150 so the ideal opportunity to make the change. It is a little heavier than the makita and the two batteries are only 1.3AH but this is no problem as there are two and a charge is 30 mins. Will see how i get on with this after the disappointment of the Makita which was just over one year old!

Will be interesting to hear how you get on with the new one Alan.

I need to upgrade from my assortment of Makita and Metabo 12v nimh tools at some stage as the batteries are fading away, and would have gone for makita in the normal course of events, but for the various tales of battery problems like yours.

I don't tend to gravitate towards the dewalt stuff though, don't know why, maybe bosch instead when I'm ready to take the plunge, we'll see.

Cheers, Paul

I'd look at the metabo drivers, i was quite impressed by theming there other tools are solid. I think they have. 5.2 amp/hr battery now also!

I do like the couple of metabo 12v drivers I have, very solid and quality feel to them, may be a bit too spendy for the new versions though but will have to check them out when I'm looking seriously. 5.2 amp/hr battery sounds amazing !!!!

Cheers, Paul

Did you call Makita's tech department. They might warranty your batteries
I worked for someone who bought Nimh Makita when they were a new wonder technology, all of the Mexican made batteries died and were replaced with Japanese packs - they admitted issues with the manufacturing
All quality manufacturers now cover batteries for 3 years -it has to be worth a phone call
Matt (still unable to wear out my NiCad stuff)

Just been out in the workshop using one of my 12v nimh metabos and it reminds me just how good and solidly made they are, it's just a quandry as to whether to spend best part of a hundred quid getting a couple of the batteries recelled, as there is plenty of life left in the drill units, or put that towards some new tech instead :-k

Same for the old makitas, although not the same build quality I am kind of invested with various trim saw, chainsaw, impact driver and stuff that accumulated over the years that would be rendered obsolete if I change.

Wonder if I keep prevaricating the price of the old tech nimh batteries will fall dramatically and I can just get a lifetimes supply of those dead cheap and keep going till the units wear themselves out !

Cheers, Paul

I have a similar 'problem' - I have a fair bit of old dewalt stuff, old and very solid but with old and useless batteries. Not helped by the fact that I have other li-ion powered tools that have great battery life - and I keep playing with various new models of drills etc sported by passing sparks. Decisions, decisions...

I use a Makita 18v daily....almost constantly. It's my most used tool by far. I have no issues other than the new chuck is flimsier than the previous. I wore one out over a 3 year period but I really couldn't complain after the use that they get. I think the 18v stuff is possibly built to last longer.

Has anyone looked at the Festool, expensive but built to last. I've 3 drill/drivers and only had to replace 1 battery in the last 8 years. Oh, and they do get a lot of use.
