Jacob, fair play to you, as mentioned, I do appreciate it, but I really feel for beginners like me, having a flat-surface, stones and blades to work from it takes out some of the 'erks' of woodworking, i'm sure myself and others as we get used to our tools more and get more experienced in general we won't need to pay so much attention to the tuning of our tools as we'll 'just know' when it's right.
 
I picked up a cast iron surface plate from an auction a few years back - I've never used it to flatten anything though. It's current use is providing ballast to my bench :oops:

Might be worth getting on the mailing lists of a few local auctioneers as there are always engineering places going bust and there are usually bargains to be had.
