Are you planning to do some carving soon? :D

Hi Olly,

Not particularly (although I might have a go now that I have a posh mallet :D ).

I made it for two reasons. First, I prefer the shape of a carver's mallet compared to the oblong shape of a carpenter's mallet. Second, I wanted one that was heavy (and this one is) because I think you get more control with light taps from a heavy mallet rather than heavy taps from a light mallet.

As some have said, it seems too nice to use but, hey, it's only a mallet :D

Thanks for all your kind comments.

Cheers

This was the one I made a xmas

But it's a bit light weight for most work. Fun to do tho and got me hooked on turning.

and talking of too good to use, I was heart broken when I did this to it:

No problem, Tom - you have a lathe so you can knock up a new one in a day :D

That's one of the great things about turning - you can get finished results so fast.

Cheers

Nice work Paul.

I've got a Lignum mallet which I bought from Workshop Heaven. You're right about the weight - it is much more appealing than having a light mallet.

Just as an interesting aside, when Rod popped round yesterday he brought his Lignum mallet to show us and the wood was a distinct blue colour whereas my piece of Lignum wasn't.

The Danish oil that I put on the mallet yesterday soaked very quickly into the Ash handle but was taking an age to dry on the Lignum, which is far more dense. I've just polished off the remains of the oil from the Lignum with a piece of kitchen paper towel and the residue on the towel is a lovely blue colour, so there's obviously something in Lignum which gives off this blue colour.

Cheers

I'm sure I read somewhere that the mallets from WH and the like are not actually proper Lignum? But some sort of very close equivalent?

Yes my mallet is a greenish blue colour (my photo does not show the correct colour). It was also a lot soapier in feel than Paul's but then the wood I used was a lot younger?

I like the shape of a carvers mallet as well... preferable to the traditional carpenters version. I used to have a really heavy lignum maul (from Tiranti's) that was about 150mm wide but it was just too heavy for general use at the bench so I sold it at PFT some time back.
If I recollect, the mallets at WH are made from laurel rather than lignum...might be wrong though - Rob

Hi Paul

Your mallet is really nice it will last a lifetime or two, i do like the pics , but as we all know pics can be deceiving as to the real size, how about giving some dimension to it actual size IE; dia taper length of handle etc make's it a bit more interesting .hc

Hi HC,

Overall length: 9 1/4"

Length of head: 3 3/8"

Dia of head (top): 3 1/2"

Dia of head (bottom): 3"

Weight: quite heavy :)

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Cheers, Paul :D
