I recently bought my first LN purchase of 2 Card Scrapers from Ax minster. Im not well versed in getting up a good burr on the edges but I can do ok, my question though is that I just use them in my hand but noticed most people on here use a holder, do you get alot better results with a holder?

I use them free-hand. If you use them on large panels they do get quite hot from the friction - then you might consider getting a holder.
Hope this helps

The holder takes care of the 'bend' that the thumbs would do. I haven't used a holder yet but would consider it, the scraper can get quite hot.

I am planning to get a holder soon, my hands have started to get a bit achey after scraping large areas. The #80 looks nice.

Stanley, Record or Veritas?

Get the Veritas version - it's superbly made

The Stanley version is quite crudely made by comparison.

Cheers

That reminds me green, Ive also started having a few strains across my wrist since using it. Its a fantastic tool, the crisp finish you can get with such ease is amazing as someone whos plane skills are such that the plane isnt aloud near proper work it gives me the ability to take some shavings.

Axminster dont seem to sell that Spoke Shave design one you've showed Paul only the plastic type one.

Hi,

You could knock up a scraper holder like mine

It is nice  - Rob
I was referring to the Veritas No80, which in my very 'umble opinion is a much better tool than the Stanley. The base is much bigger and there seems to be a slightly different geometry to the shape of the handles. The overall result is that it's a much easier tool to use than the original and I owned a couple of those but was never very happy with them. I had a go with Paul's Veritas No80 and was very impressed...so I bought one from CHT the next day :) - Rob

£42 plus VAT? I'll take that masking taped thumbs idea I think.....

Ive been using a old steel screw driver as my Burnisher, anything wrong with that?

The point about a #80 scraper or a proper scraper plane is that they have a large base which means that when scraping a large surface, there is less chance of scraping hollows into it, so it's not just about burnt fingers and thumbs

A proper burnisher would be better because the steel from which it's made is harder and the surface is polished, which will give you a better result - there are several good ones available. I use the Clifton but Veritas also make good ones.

Cheers

Paul's absolutely spot on here. Card scrapers are excellent but need to be used quite carefully or it's very easy to scrape a hollow in the work which only becomes apparent when a polish is applied to the surface. If say, there's a bit of tear out that you're trying to clean up then you'll need to scrape quite a big patch of timber to prevent this hollow from occurring. Using a scraper plane makes the chances of a hollow much less...and you don't get blisters on your thumbs :) - Rob

And having spent hours restoring 80s and 080s that cost £20+, I would say that £42 is a bargain.
...and like all Veritas stuff, it's very well made and finished - Rob

Yes; it's neither hard not smooth enough. But it'll get you by.
