hi all, got /had a cannon powershot 85 model i think. well its got pear shaped.
had it 3 years and had loads of use with pics of the kids .

its only 4 mega pics.
is it worth fixing.
have got a replacment so not to bothered. just hate throwing things :)

That's a good little camera, but it's difficult to assess whether to repair it without knowing what the fault is. Perhaps you can get an estimate first? The problem nowadays with electronic repairs is the limited availability of spares. With new models continually emerging, keeping a stock of comprehensive spares gets more and more difficult. :(

Ray.

Going slightly OT, I know what you mean, Lugo. I've got a couple of digital compacts and a whole load of 35mm Nikon stuff that I can't bear to chuck away and yet has no real resale value.

I've just been looking at Freecycle to get rid of some sound but unwanted furniture - so might offer it all up on there. It might make me feel better about it!

Re digital cameras and repairs, if it is over a year old it is probably not worth getting it fixed, indeed can it be fixed? is it insured? 'Oh Lordy I have just knocked it off the table' is a popular option. But may not be a comfortable approach.

Have a look at this site, Fuji's refurbished cameras, they are brand new, guaranteed and stupid cheap, I bought my fancy pants manual s9600 thingy there for £180 and it is now even cheaper, Pah!!! and they have ny boys camera for £30.00 less then he paid for it a week ago Pah Pah Pah.

Lugo, I have a 12 year old photography fiend in the house who is dying to get hold of an SLR camera, he got into photography at the age 0f 8, when he started using my first digicam, he is now on his fourth camera, a Fuji thing with an 18x zoom lense, an amazing thing. Here is a link to his Flickr site

showing some of his photos. At first we humoured him with this, bought him the cheapest camera I could find, then it got real bad. He just chopped in his playstation and games to fund his latest camera. It does seem that he has a talent for this business. if you are getting rid of your stuff drop me a line. is that a bit cheeky?

All the best, Chunko'.

I have a Canon Powershot A70 that is at least 5 years old. It developed a fault where it would not show any output on the screen when I tried to take a photo, but it showed the earlier photos OK. This is a known fault with the CCD and Canon will repair it free of charge (even if it is out of warranty). This fault occurs on several models. I sent mine off and it was returned a week later in full working order !

already got the replacment its sony cyber shot w90. really pleased.
mum is into photography so bought it off her for very little ( mums are great :D )
looks like its not worth worrying about old one

Mungo, got a link or address for Canon repairs? My Powershot A80 lost the "live" picture last week for the first time (camera must be 3/4 yr old now). Just thought it was a bit of condensation due to the cold weather. Hasn't happened since but..........

Dunno about repairing camera's but Chunko, your son's pictures are superb! He's got a very good eye for detail and composure, and if that's what he's like now, he could be the next David Bailey when he's older!

Repairs are expensive. Our local camera shop wants a deposit of £80 just to diagnose the problem! My own (Panasonic) camera just developed a fault after 9 months and I have a 2 year warranty with it. I figure if it quits after that time it'll go to landfill. Same happened with my DV-camcorder - worked fine for almost 18 months and then wouldn't charge the battery any more so it's now useless. £80 will buy a new one (almost) but as my regular camera can now record videos too who needs a general purpose camcorder any more?

Sony takes the mickey - my camcorder has started playing up - you have to send it straight to Sony for repair for a fixed repair cost of £170!!!!
Who in their right mind is going to pay that? The equivalent model is now £119 from Amazon. Even the woman from Sony said it's not worth it!
It's frustrating because the new model has less features than my current model - no hotshoe, no external mic input, no lens thread etc.
Arghh.
