There is no such thing as real ale in France.

It sounds like you need a copy of this book and some Red Cross parcels.

The Dave Line book has loads of recipes based on classic brews which are now no longer around. It was our family's home brew bible.

In my youth,Theakstons XB was a favourite (stronger than the bitter, not as syrupy as Old Peculier) - even went on a pilgrimage to the White Bear at Masham,in the grounds of the Theakstons brewery.
Black Sheep and Riggwelter,by the Black Sheep brewery are good also (son of the Theakston family)
Had a pint of Marstons Owd Roger once - that strong, you could almost slice it,made Old P seem weak..

These days,it's almost exclusively Guinness 8)

I am sitting reading this with a can of Speckled Hen in my hand, I know draught or bottled is better but it's the end of the month and I'm skint.

Coming from Cornwall I tend to go for the Cornish Ales (except for Betty Stoggs which is disgusting) but have also (living in Somerset) discovered proper cider made by the local farms which is rather nice........'tisn't ale but it's definitely real!!

I am not a real ale fan and in fact don't drink much beer at all.....but. When I used to scuba dive I did try a few nice ales down in poole well a place named Corfe Castle to be precise and I am sure one of the ones I really did like was called 'Bishops Cassock' very smooth beer with a nice taste to it. Mind you I had had a few by that time so it might have been washing up water for all I knew.

Lager is a woman's drink.

Anyone not up to speed with this countries fine heritage of local ales should get themselves down to Morrison's and take advantage of their '4 for a fiver' pick and mix offer.

A true anorak would argue that most bottled beer isn't 'real' as it's been filtered but I can promise that you won't be disappointed.

My favourites;

Marstons Pedigree
Black Sheep
Timothy Taylors Landlord
Abbot Ale

Cheers

I think you might find that most of the population of mainland Europe would disagree with you :) . Certainly some of the lagers produced in the this county (Carling and Tetleys to name two  ) are well worth steering clear of, but a good cold, continental brew from Germany or eastern Europe on a hot summers day takes some beating...don't get me started on 'Murrican beer tho :D
Fwiw, beer brewed at home (and I don't mean out of a can, but from the malt and hops) as I used to do it many years ago, is the equal and often can be better (believe it or not) than anything that could be bought in a pub. Trouble is, it's very messy, took a whole weekend to brew 5 gals and once and once conditioned, disappeared down my gullet fairly swiftly  ...which reminds me, got to do the Christmas brew this morning (out of a can :( ) - Rob

I love a bit of real ale, don't think I can pick a favourite though too many! Did have a particularly good pint of Thwaites while up north on business last month.

Oh also Wetherspoons has actually got something going for it, I'm certain it has made many young lad into a real ale fan! When I started going in at 18(cough) Theakstons was the drink of choice (cheaptest pint!) and I've never liked lager much for this reason!

...and Spitfire. ....
Fortunately, these are not local brews. If they were, I'd never see him sober.

Gill

But if you jump in the car and visit the Swan at Newlands, Malvern, you'll find Spitfire :D

And then you can visit the Nags Head...voted Best Pub in England in the Good Beer Guide 2008. Huge number of real ales on draught.

A very popular pub in Norwich showing real ale alive and well. I think one of those odd facts is that Norfolk has more real ale pubs and micro breweries than any other county, well we have to be good at something, obviously not football.

In Hampshire there are a growing number of small breweries serving some of the local pubs:
Ringwood Brewery - Fortyniner (4.9%) & Old Thumper (5.6%)
Pots Ales - based at the Flower Pots, Cheriton
etc etc.

From the bigger boys I like Gales (Horndean) HSB and Wadsworths 6X.

For the past 40 years I have had the joy of working and driving around Hampshire and trying out the many real ales which are available now - only a small glass though with lunch (and not every day)!!

Rod :)
