Or is there an actual benefit to be had in owning such a sexy ass piece of metal if so what is it?

At the far high end, a lot of the build effort and cost is devoted to generating intrinsic beauty and the law of diminishing returns.

But at the "Moderate" price point (200-400 per plane), the cost/performance ratio is pretty good.

I suggest finding a nearby UKW'er, or a trade show, or a tool shop that has benches and trying one of these planes out.

Leave your credit card at home :)

For fine cabinet making, planes by Clifton, Veritas and Lie Nielsen are in a different league. If you get the chance, try them out - it's the best way to see for yourself what the benefits are.

Cheers

Hi,

Some watery tart will throw it to you from a lake.

Are they made from smole and mirrors?

It's going to be a woody with a Neutronium/Dilithium crystal/Smole matrix sole, laser welded or even dovetailed onto the main body. After all, if it was a pure Neutronium casting it would be a tad on the heavy side - Rob

Hi,

Yes smole, its next to smoke on my keyboard

And it would probably be so unstable as to eventually collapse in on itsself creating a black hole and sucking you and the contents of your workshop into a black hole!

Just spent the last 10 minutes laughing to myself about a plane made of purest smole  (I know; small things, small minds etc. etc.)

Now Neutronium, that's deadly serious right?

They've harnessed the little black hole to have an aperture right above the mouth so that the shavings are sucked straight in.

Now I can plane my wood in the living room during the commercials when I watch Dr Who!

Rob. Would you make some turning tools and sandpaper with Neutronium technology so we can have dust free wood turning too? :)

Well lets just stop and think...

Its the blade that needs to be Neutronium really, as the material in front of it is drawn into the singularity of the black hole it creates with its own gravitational field.

I see a dawning of a new age of quantum woodworking, where rather than sharpening our tools to create a perfect edge we seek to create an event horizon at the edge of our blades - the ultimate sharpness.

I presume we're on the right track here Rob?

Cheers, Ed

No offence meant, I thought from your earlier response you were seeing the humour in a simple typo, which is what amused me. Apparently not.

Cheers, Ed
