What did you end up doing and how did they turn out?
I'm contemplating this same question now and wondering whether untreated larch might work well. I guess it won't last as long as treated/maintained but thinking along the larch cladding idea. Was thinking to build a door in similar style to yours and then put a secondary vertical spaced out cladding on the front of it for aesthetic.
