Hi there,

Is it possible to build a hardwood (Oak) carcass (20mm thick) where two of the sides are square and the other two sides are less than square with the length not in the grain? I know this is not done, but I'm wondering at what ratio this becomes truly impossible. The carcass would be double lapped and single lapped dovetailed, would this provide extra help or would it still be vulnerable even after a glue up?

Thanks alot :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean - maybe a sketch or something would help explain what you are asking?

If I understand you, then through dovetails cut across the grain will snap off under the slightest load, not something I'd recommend. There are many ways of attaching wood, but in the circumstances you describe, dovetails are not correct.

Ray.
