It was on a web but I don't know if it was making a web or just caught up in it. Sorry I didn't get to count if it had six or eight legs before swmbo vacuumed it away. What the f is it?

I'd go with beetle too. Looks too much like hard wing cases on its back for it to be a tick, and I can only see 3 actual legs on the near side. Depending on size, though, it looks uncomfortably like the dreaded woodworm (furniture beetle), so keep/tell SWMBO to keep (!) eyes open for little piles of dust under your cherished Chippendale :(

Looks to me like a shield bug, there's lots of different ones though so I wouldn't care to be more specific.
My problem at this time of year is Garden Spiders, damn great big 'uns. The speed at which they can construct a web across my workshop doorway is incredable!

In our house we have only one type if the wife spots 'em. Squashed!

The legs look 'beetle' like for sure ...

I can see why 'tic' has been suggested ... the Spiders, tics and scorpions are the arachnids I believe.. 8 legs.... but the body does look like the tic's i've seen on sheep, cats etc...

But I think 'bettle' just based on the leg structure and appearance. 8)

I can't say I looked close enough to see if it had wing cases but I really don't think there were any. I've only seen ticks that have been feeding, horrid little buggers. But I do think it probably is/was a tick, it looked very much like the dog tick in this pic, bottom row, second from left.
