Bronze phosphor bearing play ?? Do I need a new one

Oops! As usual :) Jacob is right, the assembly is fixed at the sealed bearing end, so it is indeed a strange arrangement. I shall not bother trying to work out what is going on because it'll hurt my head too much - but it is a well proven design so obviously someone understands it fully!

Another thing which confused me was finding two grub screws down the locating hole not just one. Took me some time to work out another one was still down the hole. NB they don't need tightening - the bearing needs to move to and fro as you adjust the lock rings

I don't see why they didn't just put a sealed bearing at both ends. The loads on a lathe must be tiny compared to the loads on car wheels so surely a similar sized bearing would be plenty.
Perhaps the bronze lump is just a gimmick.

Anyone should be able to save a copy of the image to their Windows PC by right clicking on the image & selecting 'Save image as'. In the window that opens they can (if they wish) re-title the image & select where on the PC they want the image to download to.
