I've not had much turning time lately, with work etc... ....... but thank goodness for bank holidays :D I managed to make it out to the shed for a bit of a turn this morning 8) I decided to use up a few odds and ends that were laying around and made me some boxes......

Spalted sycamore

Unknown rescued firewood(it was a window frame)

Spalted sycamore again(this piece was a bit far gone but the colours were nice)

All three together

Your critique/opinions are very welcome :)

Cheers JT

Hi JT,

I like your spalted sycamore boxes, particularly the tall capsule-style one - how tall is it?
The other box makes good use of an old window frame (is it maybe sapele?) and I like the shape, although perhaps the finial is a little heavy-looking?

I like the spalted ones. Not really keen on the foot of the sapele one. (It is Sapele)
It's not quite balanced for me. Other than that great turnings.

the two sycamore ones are good but the sapele one just doesnt look right, the base and finial lack crisp edges etc the proportions of the other two work much better.

While I like the spalted sycamore, and could look at it all day, the 'sapele' one really appeals to me. I liked it a lot and wouldn't change a thing.

PS I was given some stuff called Morante, which turns nicely and looks very much like the sapele.

Thanks for the replies :D

TM the 'capsule' is 7" tall, it came about simply because I liked the pattern of the spalting,I thought it looked a bit like a horses head! It opens in the middle and I thought it would make a good box to keep pens or something like that in.

The 'sapele' one has more of a pointy cone knob for taking the top off rather than an out and out fancy finial, if you see what I mean. I agree the foot didn't come out too well, it is a bit fat and could do with some sort of transition from foot to box, but I don't find it that bad.

We're doing a craft fair in May and I'm turning a few small things like these to go between the bowls

Thanks for all your input

JT
