Block plane advice please

Also... have ordered a Veritas Mk II (couldn't find the MkX.. guess they have sold out a few days ago ) honing guide to keep me on the straight and narrow from the start.

I already have the 6000/1000 combi waterstone from Axminster - is this good to use with plane blades too ?

yes ed, the only thing is to keep the stone flat.
many use the dry wall screen thingie sold by b&q.

the mk 2 is a nice and useful jig well made like all veritas stuff.
