Made a small chest with a maple lid but it feels quite heavy to open and close max. 95 degrees, i need some hardware to give assistance but my usual supplier toolstation do not have anything suitable can any one help please.

Whatever you fit, make sure that the lid can be locked open.

There are stories of small children, climbing into chests and being unable to get out.

Hello.
On this subject, I am searching for a lid support, something to stop my grandchildren's toy box lid falling onto their little fingers!

I had considered getting a tailgate gas strut, prolly about 25 quid from a breaker, but this kind of thing http://www.nextag.com/lid-support/search-html are all over the States for just a few dollars and look far more professional: Try as I might, I cannot find them in the UK. I've just spent an evening on Google typing in all the different names they might be called and all I can find are ready made toy boxes with them fitted.

Does anyone have an idea of where in the UK might I find such a thing? I have always struggled finding good hardware at sensible prices. All ideas or suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks
Jim

I imagine this is the sort of thing your looking for?

The only thing like this I can find in the UK is some advice telling me that I should use them!
I guess the closest so far has been the
http://www.sugatsune.co.jp/english/prod ... nsdx.shtml
on the Sugatsune site. I may have to go that route but why are they not priced? Looking for a way to get the price the only thing on their "contact us" page is an email form letting me register my company with them and tell them what products I'm interested in!
When I Google for these they are all over the USA for about 6 dollars each.
Do our elf and safety not like them or something?
I'll wait for both Sugatsune and Hafele to get back to me. What a pain!

Thanks for the suggestions, anyway.

Jim

Hi WiZer.
This is the sort of thing, the ones in the States appear to be slightly more basic, but I suppose 6 quid isn't too much really.
I shall take this further.
I am waiting for Sugatsune to get back to me, but also have to go around to my daughter's to weigh the lid so I can work out if the one you mention is man enough for the job.
They do have a torque calculator on the site which makes it easier, I shall have to try and get this done this evening.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for all the input

Jim

I have just fitted the sugatsune hds-20k left and right and its done the job lid is supported in up, controlled downward movement that tails off near to shut, so as to hold it shut .there torque calculator worked so all good apart from £22.91.
