Hi,

I would like to build the bench showcased on this website :

http://www.stickley.com/OurProducts_Det ... mit=SEARCH

It looks real solid. The only thing that gets to me is the connection between the back and the armrest.

It seems like the connection is made with some dowels or screws. Even if it's a design that has been around for a long time, I feel like this would be the weak point of this project???

What's your opinion and what should I do?

Its a design that has been around for a while so I'm sure the original construction method is o.k.
How about using a floating tenon on that joint instead? Stronger than dowels!
Hope this helps
Philly

P.s. Great piece - I love Stickley stuff :D

It would appear from a blow up pf the joint that it is dowelled or screwed.

Thanks guys,

Philly, you're right I'm sure it's strong enough. But I can't shake the impression that something ought to be different about that joint?

Maybe I'm just trying to overbuild...

I am somewhat of a newbie but, this is what found in my research.

I didn't see it in any of the posts so I thought I would mention that the joint is shown as a blind M&T in "Shop Drawings for Greene & Greene Furniture" by Robert W. Lang. The book doesn't show a screw in this joint so the plug may be decorative or, it may be covering a screw since the joint for the arm to front leg is also a blind M&T with a screw.

It is a nice looking bench. Good luck with the project.

Think I'd go with Philly on this one and fit a floating tenon - or a domino if you have expensive tastes in tools  :D
