Calpol, I've got the Makita at home and I've used the Bosch at college - they appear to be as close to identical as I can see. Can't fault the performance of either; cuts are paraellel and square to the fence. I'm not sure how they compare to the Lamellos though, if you could stretch that far.

I think the only lamello that will offer significant improvements over the bosch makita mafell etc would be the Top20 model with its step memory dial system. This model is over £600 so is considerably more money.

Well I just went over and took a long hard look at the Lamello Top 20 S4. Just about the only plus points it has over it's competitors are the fine blade height adjuster (+/- 2mm x 0.1mm steps) and possibly the additional L-fence to go on the front of the swinging fence plate. I don't see the former as a significant improvement and the latter is easily copied by drilling the fence flap and adding a wooden sub fence. So how can anyone justify the huge price difference other than snobbery. I'm not anti Lamello? I have a Lamina E laminate edge trimmer which is a super bit of kit bought in a moment of trade show frenzy, but I can do just as well with a Makita laminate trimmer and decent cutters.

I think all the big name BJs offer reasonable build quality (although the deWalt DW682 seems to have a fence racking issue) but for what it's worth the Mafell/AEG/Milwaukee/Kress BJs offer one significant advantage over any Lamello - the router-style turret stop which is a real boon when switching between say 6mm inset joints, flush joints and joints in 12mm stock. Not everyone can find a use for that feature.

Olly & Jon, I was seriously thinking about the Lamello C3 but can't justify the price at the moment (definately not the top jobby!) I was made redundant the other day so I'm just looking for a descent one so I can work at home for the time being...

FatFreddysCat, the Mafell is £85 more than the Bosch so while I really do like the turret I think I'll have to give it a miss . But you're right about the DeWalt fence, we had that problem as well...

But the AEG is available at the bargain price of 5p under £140 at Transtools (link thanks to beech1948). Also available in red as the Milwaukee PJ710 with a slightly more powerful motor and a much more powerful price tag. Front end of both is identical to the Mafell and is sold in some parts of the EU as a Kress

Do they have the turret jobby? Why does nowhere show a pic of the other side of it? :x

Yes, as the link supplied by p111dom shows. AFAIK the machine was originally sold in blue badged "AEG". Atlas-Copco bought AEG power tools, so the model appeared in black. A-C then bought Milwaukee in the US of A so the model went red as well. Finally A-C sold AEG/Milwaukee to the same outfit who own Ryobi. Hence the non-availability of the Atlas-Copco variant unless someone has old stock. The original Mafell one used a Kress motor with their peculiar barrel switch. Mafell now do a more conventional motor. The Kress 800FDF variant (see http://www.kress-elektrik.com/Power-too ... mmerce_pi1[catUid]=21&tx_commerce_pi1[showUid]=36) is available in Germany. The manual for it is on the net in DDF form at http://www.kress-elektrik.com/Operation ... lelist_pi1[sword]=%22800+FDF%22 and is very similar to the Mafell manual.

As I said, the difference between the different models is all down to the motor/gearbox. The front end is identical for all of them. Angle grinder motors being much of a muchness I don't see any pointy in spending more money than you really have to unless you really insist on having the tool in a Systainer. That's what our Mafell came in
